Overview

How to Install the STX150-470 Star Teck Cable Fitting
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the STX150-470 Star Teck cable fitting, including cable preparation, assembly, and sealing with either liquid (SC4-KIT-1) or putty (SC65) compound for hazardous locations. Installation must be performed by a qualified electrician.

STX150-470 Star Teck Cable Fitting, SC4-KIT-1 Liquid Sealing Compound, SC65 Putty Sealing Compound, Fiber damming material
- De-energize Circuits
WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Before installing or performing maintenance, verify that all circuits are de-energized. Ensure the area is safe for work.
- Prepare Cable Outer Jacket and Armor
Determine the required working length of conductors inside the enclosure or device. Remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the cable armor. Carefully cut the armor using a hacksaw. CAUTION: Do not nick or cut the conductor insulation during this process.
- Adjust Armor Strip Length
Trim the outer jacket to achieve an exposed armor strip length between 1.350 and 1.625 inches over the jacket, and 1.187 and 1.545 inches over the armor, as specified for the STX150-470 fitting.
- Feed Cable and Tighten Gland Nut
Feed the prepared cable through the gland nut opening and push until the cable armor firmly hits the end stop. Tighten the gland nut to obtain an appropriate seal or to the maximum torque of 1200 in-lbs. Ensure the bushing and collar ring seal evenly around the cable’s outer jacket and that the cable remains centered to obtain an optimal seal.
- Disassemble the Sealing Chamber
Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union. Unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly.
- Prepare Conductors
If installing power cables, trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8” to 3/8” to expose the conductor bundle. If installing shielded data cables, trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8” to 3/8” to expose the shielded conductor bundle, then carefully remove the outer (overall) shield from the conductor bundle without nicking or damaging inner shields. Remove any filler materials without disturbing or damaging inner shields.
- Select and Prepare Sealing Compound
Choose your sealing compound: SC4-KIT-1 Liquid Sealant or SC65 Putty Sealant. If using SC4-KIT-1, pack the fiber damming material tightly into all voids between conductors and the body, spreading strands of any uninsulated grounding conductor. If using SC65 (not for shielded cables or 5+ conductors), slightly spread the insulated conductors and uninsulated grounding conductor strands. Thoroughly mix the two parts of the SC65 compound until it is a uniform blue color without streaks. WARNING: Wear gloves and proper PPE. In case of contact with skin or eyes, flush thoroughly.
- Apply Sealing Compound
If using SC4-KIT-1 Liquid Sealant: Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body sub-assembly until it completely seats. Position the cable/fitting vertically. Mix the compound according to its package instructions and dispense it into the end of the sealing chamber until it fills to the top. If using SC65 Putty Sealant: Apply a small portion of the mixed compound in the middle of the insulated conductors and between individual strands of the uninsulated grounding conductor. Bring conductors back together and apply compound all around them, building up a plug approximately equal to the small inside diameter and length of the sealing chamber.
- Finalize Sealing Chamber and Clean
If using SC65 Putty Sealant: Slide the sealing chamber onto the cable and compound. Screw the sealing chamber to the body sub-assembly until it completely seats. Remove any excess compound. Fill the throat area of the sealing chamber with compound, using a suitable wooden dowel to pack it tightly around the conductors. For both sealant types: Remove all excess compound material from the outside of the sealing chamber with a damp cloth. WARNING: Do not use abrasive cleaners such as powder cleaners, sandpaper, steel wool, or wire brushes that may damage the flame path.
- Mount Hub and Secure Assembly
Mount the hub in the desired location. Once the sealing compound has solidified (approximately 1 hour for both types), place the encapsulated assembly into the hub and secure it in position by tightening the union until it bottoms (metal to metal contact). If using putty, repack compound tightly around conductors if required. Allow the compound to set for approximately one hour before disturbing the conductors.
