This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing the cable, assembling the STX Series Star Teck PVC fitting, and applying liquid-type sealing compound for a secure and compliant installation. Installation must be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Hacksaw, Strap wrenches, Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT, Fiber damming material, Lubricant, Damp cloth, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including gloves
- Prepare Cable for Fitting
WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Before installing, verify that all circuits are de-energized. Determine the working length of conductors required inside the enclosure or device. Remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the armor, then cut the armor using a hacksaw. CAUTION: Do not nick or cut the conductor insulation.
- Trim Outer Jacket and Cut Cable Boot
Trim the outer jacket to expose the armor strip length as required by your cable specifications, referring to the fitting's range over armor/jacket (0.490-0.680 IN over armor, 0.600-0.760 IN over jacket for STX050-464PVC). Next, determine where to cut the cable boot; either unscrew the gland nut and cut the boot in front of the cable, or progressively cut slices off the boot until the opening can snugly slide on the armor.
- Assemble Gland Nut and Tighten
Feed the prepared cable through the gland nut opening and push until the cable armor hits the end stop. Tighten the gland nut until you obtain an appropriate seal or to the maximum torque of 300 IN-LBS for the STX050-464PVC. The bushing should seal evenly around the cable’s outer jacket. Ensure the cable remains centered to obtain an optimal seal. Apply lubricant where indicated prior to tightening the gland nut.
- Disassemble Fitting for Sealing
Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union. Then, unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly.
- Prepare Conductors
For power cables, trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8”-3/8” to expose the conductor bundle. If you are using shielded data cables, refer to Section 2 of the original instructions for additional steps to trim the inner jacket, remove the outer (overall) shield, and remove filler materials without disturbing or damaging inner shields.
- Pack Fiber Damming Material
Pack the fiber damming material tightly into all voids between the conductors and the body. Spread the strands of any uninsulated grounding conductor, where applicable, to ensure the compound can spread into all areas.
- Reassemble Sealing Chamber
Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body sub-assembly until it completely seats on the body.
- Apply Liquid Sealing Compound (SC4-KIT-1)
Position the cable/fitting into a vertical position. Mix the SC4-KIT-1 liquid sealing compound following the instructions provided on its package. Dispense the sealing compound into the end of the sealing chamber, filling it to the top for the STX050-464PVC fitting, and allow the level of compound to stabilize.
- Clean and Mount Hub
CAUTION: Remove all excess compound material from outside of the sealing chamber with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners such as powder cleaners, sandpaper, steel wool, or a wire brush that may damage the flame path. Mount the hub in your desired location.
- Secure Encapsulated Assembly
When the sealing compound is solidified (after approximately 1 hour), place the encapsulated assembly into the hub and secure it in position by tightening the union until it bottoms (metal to metal contact).
