How to Install STX050-462PVC Cable Fitting with Liquid Sealant
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing the cable, assembling the STX050-462PVC cable fitting, and sealing it with SC4-KIT-1 liquid compound for power cables. Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Hacksaw, Strap wrenches, Damp cloth, Gloves
Supplies needed:
STX050-462PVC cable fitting, Cable (compatible with STX050-462PVC), SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT, Lubricant, Fiber damming material
- De-energize Circuits
WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Before beginning installation or performing maintenance, verify that all circuits are de-energized.
- Prepare the Cable Working Length
Determine the required length of conductors inside the enclosure or device. Remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the armor, then cut the armor using a hacksaw. CAUTION: Do not nick or cut the conductor insulation.
- Trim Outer Jacket
Trim the outer jacket to expose the armor strip length as indicated in the product table for STX050-462PVC.
- Prepare the Cable Boot
Unscrew the gland nut from the body. Force the square-cut cable into the boot and cut the boot in front of the cable (Method 1, Figure 3). Alternatively, strip the cable jacket off the armor and progressively cut slices off the boot until the opening snugly slides on the armor (Method 2, Figure 4).
- Feed Cable and Apply Lubricant
Apply lubricant where indicated on the fitting prior to screwing the gland nut. Feed the cable through the gland nut opening and push until the cable armor hits the end stop (Figure 5).
- Tighten the Gland Nut
Using strap wrenches, tighten the gland nut until an appropriate seal is obtained or to the maximum torque specified in the table for STX050-462PVC (300 IN-LBS). Ensure the bushing seals evenly around the cable's outer jacket and the cable remains centered for an optimal seal (Figure 4).
- Disassemble Hub and Sealing Chamber
Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union. Unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly (Figure 7).
- Trim Inner Jacket
Trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8”-3/8” to expose the conductor bundle (Figure 8).
- Pack Fiber Damming Material
Pack the fiber damming material tightly into all voids between conductors and the body. Spread strands of any uninsulated grounding conductor, if applicable (Figure 1a).
- Reassemble Sealing Chamber
Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body subassembly until it completely seats on the body (Figure 2a).
- Mix and Dispense Liquid Sealing Compound
Position the cable and fitting vertically. Mix the SC4-KIT-1 liquid sealing compound according to its package instructions. Dispense the compound into the end of the sealing chamber until the level stabilizes and fills to the top (Figure 3a).
- Clean Excess Compound
CAUTION: Remove all excess compound material from the outside of the sealing chamber with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners such as powder cleaners, sandpaper, steel wool, or wire brush that may damage the flame path.
- Mount Hub and Secure Assembly
Mount the hub in the desired location. After the sealing compound has solidified (approximately 1 hour), place the encapsulated assembly into the hub and secure it by tightening the union until it bottoms (metal to metal contact) (Figures 4a and 5a).
