How to Install Star Teck PVC Cable Fitting ST250-478SPVC

This guide provides detailed instructions for preparing cable, trimming the boot, and properly installing the ST250-478SPVC Star Teck PVC cable fitting to ensure a secure and sealed connection in accordance with electrical codes.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Hacksaw, Strap wrenches, Wire pulling lubricant (optional, Cat. No. 15-236)

Supplies needed:

Star Teck PVC Cable Fitting (ST250-478SPVC), Armored Cable

  1. Disconnect Power and Prepare Cable

WARNING: Risk of shock, disconnect power before installation. Ensure installation is performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Choose the appropriate ST250-478SPVC fitting to accommodate your enclosure and cable. For ST250-478PVC, ensure your cable's outer jacket diameter is between 2.461 and 2.666 inches, and the armor diameter is between 2.580 and 2.840 inches. Determine the required working length of the cable. Remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the armor. Using a hacksaw, cut the armor to the specified strip length, which for ST250-478PVC is between 2.440 and 2.750 inches. Trim the outer jacket to adjust the exposed armor strip length as indicated.

  2. Trim the Cable Boot

To determine where to cut the cable boot, use one of the following methods: Method 1 (Gland Nut Removal): Unscrew the gland nut from the fitting body. Force the square-cut cable into the boot. Cut the boot directly in front of the cable end. Method 2 (Progressive Trimming): Strip the cable jacket off the armor. Progressively cut thin slices off the boot until the opening can snugly slide onto the cable armor. CAUTION: Do not over-strip the boot; there should be no gaps between the boot and the cable jacket. Note that for every 1/4 inch cut off the taper, the boot diameter increases by 0.035 inches. Apply wire pulling lubricant (e.g., Cat. No. 15-236) to facilitate easier installation if needed.

  3. Insert Cable and Secure Fitting

Feed the prepared cable through the gland nut opening. Push the cable until the cable armor firmly hits the internal end stop of the fitting. Using strap wrenches (as PVC coated fittings require them), tighten the gland nut until you achieve an appropriate seal around the cable's outer jacket. Refer to the product table for the maximum torque value (e.g., 1600 in-lbs for the 2-1/2 inch hub size of ST250-478PVC). Ensure the bushing seals evenly around the cable’s outer jacket and the cable remains centered for an optimal seal.
