This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the proper installation of Sweetheart SHC 500 Connectors, including cable preparation, assembly, and torque specifications. Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable local, state, and national electrical codes, installation standards, and safety rules to prevent electric shock.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Cutting tool, Wire brush, Torque wrench
Supplies needed:
Sweetheart SHC 500 Connector, Electrical cable, Silicone grease, Correct cut-off ring
- Prepare the Connector
Remove the insulating sleeve from the connector outlet. Select the correct cut-off ring that corresponds to the specific cable size being used.
- Cut the Rocket Sleeve
Using the selected cut-off ring as a guide, cut off the rocket sleeve at the tip of the arrow. Ensure the correct cable size is visible on the opened rocket after cutting. Refer to the connector markings for specific cut points based on wire size (e.g., #8 to #4, #2 to 2/0, 3/0 to 250, 300 to 350, 350 to 500).
- Strip Cable Insulation
Strip approximately 2-1/4 inches of insulation from the end of the cable, exposing the conductor.
- Bevel Insulation Edge (Optional)
Optionally, bevel the cut edge of the cable insulation. While not strictly necessary, this is a preferred practice for a cleaner finish.
- Clean Conductor Surface
Thoroughly wire brush the bare conductor to break up and remove any oxides from its surface, ensuring good electrical contact.
- Lubricate and Position Rocket
Wipe the cable clean. Apply silicone grease to the prepared cable end. Slide the cut rocket over the prepared cable.
- Insert Conductor into Outlet
Insert the prepared conductor into the connector outlet. Ensure that a maximum of 1/8 inch of bare conductor is showing after insertion.
- Position Rocket Sleeve
Slide the rocket sleeve over the outlet and onto the PVC shoulder. Continue sliding until the rocket butts firmly against the connector bar.
- Tighten Set Screws
Tighten the set screws down onto the conductors to the recommended torque specifications: For #6 to #4 wire, apply 120 in.-lbs. (10 ft.-lbs.). For #2 to 350 MCM wire, apply 240 in.-lbs. (20 ft.-lbs.). For 400 to 500 MCM wire, apply 360 in.-lbs. (30 ft.-lbs.).
