- Observe Safety Precautions
WARNING: Danger of Electric Shock! Installation of this product must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable local, state, and national electrical codes, installation standards, and safety rules.
- Prepare the Connector Rocket/Cap Ring
Identify the cable size being used. For the feed cable, cut the SHC 3830 rocket/cap ring as shown in the diagrams (e.g., 1st Ring 350, 1st Ring #6, 2nd Ring 4/0, 3rd Ring 1/0). For the service cable, cut the CS 4197 rocket/cap ring as shown (e.g., 600-750, 500-550, 300-400, 2/0-250, #2-1/0, #8-#4, #14-#10). Cut the rocket/cap ring at the tip of the arrow to leave only the correct wire range showing.
- Prepare the Cable Insulation
Wipe the cable clean. Apply silicone grease to the cable and slide the cut rocket over it. Strip approximately 2 1/4 inches of insulation from the cable to bare the conductor. Penciling the edge of the insulation is recommended to ease installation but is not required.
- Prepare the Conductor
Thoroughly wire brush the bare conductor to break up any surface oxides. Add oxide inhibitor and brush it into the conductor strands.
- Insert the Conductor
Insert the prepared conductor into the outlet barrel of the connector. Ensure that a maximum of 1/8 inch of bare conductor is showing outside the barrel.
- Tighten the Setscrews
Tighten the setscrews down on the conductor to the specified torque. For wire sizes #12 to #2, apply 120 in-lbs (10 ft-lbs). For wire sizes 1/0 to 350 Kcmil, apply 360 in-lbs (30 ft-lbs). A torque wrench is recommended. If not available, use a 5/16 inch allen wrench or a 3/8 inch drive ratchet with an allen adapter. Do not use a 'T' handle wrench or 1/2 inch drive.
- Complete Rocket Sleeve Installation
Slide the rocket sleeve over the outlet and onto the PVC shoulder until the rocket butts firmly against the connector bar.
