How to Install Copper Compression Connectors, Lugs, and Splices
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of copper compression connectors, lugs, and splices onto electrical cables, ensuring a secure and reliable electrical connection.
Estimated time: 15m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Appropriate crimping dies
Supplies needed:
Copper compression connector, lug, or splice, Electrical cable, Clean cloth
- Observe Safety Precautions
WARNING: Disconnect all power to the circuit before beginning installation to prevent risk of electrical shock. CAUTION: This product must be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with all national and local electrical codes. Read and understand all instructions and safety information in this manual before proceeding with any steps.
- Confirm Connector and Cable Compatibility
Confirm that the selected copper compression connector, lug, or splice is fully compatible with the specific electrical cable size and type you are using. Refer to product specifications and compatibility charts to ensure a proper match.
- Strip Cable Insulation
Carefully strip the insulation from the end of the electrical cable to the length specified by the connector manufacturer. Ensure that the cable's individual strands are not damaged, nicked, or cut during the stripping process.
- Brush Cable Conductors
Using a wire brush (e.g., ABB catalog number WWB1, if available), thoroughly brush the exposed cable conductors that will be inserted into the connector. This action removes any oxidation or contaminants, ensuring a clean surface for optimal electrical contact.
- Insert Cable into Connector
Fully insert the prepared and cleaned cable conductors into the barrel of the copper compression connector, lug, or splice. Push the cable in until it firmly reaches the internal stop or the specified insertion depth.
- Crimp the Connection
Consult the provided Tool and Die Index to select the appropriate crimping tool and die combination for your specific cable size and connector. Crimp the connector the number of times indicated in the chart. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center and space crimps uniformly along the splice. For lugs, make the first crimp at the inner end of the barrel and space crimps uniformly along the barrel.
- Remove Excess Inhibitor
After completing all crimps, use a clean cloth to wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor that may have been displaced from the connection during the crimping process. This ensures a neat and clean finish.
