This guide provides essential safety information and step-by-step instructions for properly installing copper compression lugs and splices, ensuring secure and reliable electrical connections.
Estimated time: 15m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush (e.g., ABB catalog number WWB1), Crimping tool (e.g., Blackburn, Burndy, T&B, Dieless hydraulic), Appropriate die set (specific to cable size and tool)
Supplies needed:
Copper stranded cable, Copper compression lugs or splices, Oxide inhibitor (if not pre-applied), Cleaning cloth
- Ensure Safety and Prepare for Installation
WARNING: Risk of shock. Always disconnect power before beginning any installation work. CAUTION: This product must be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Read and thoroughly understand all instructions and safety information in this manual before proceeding with the installation.
- Prepare the Cable and Connector
First, confirm that the copper compression connector (lug or splice) is compatible with your specific copper cable size. Next, carefully strip the insulation from the cable end, ensuring no damage occurs to the cable's strands. Use a wire brush, such as ABB catalog number WWB1, to thoroughly brush the stripped cable side that will be inserted into the connector to remove any oxidation.
- Insert Cable and Crimp the Connection
Fully insert the prepared cable into the barrel of the copper connector. Consult the 'Tool and Die Index' provided in the product documentation to select the correct crimping tool and die combination for your cable size. Crimp the connector the specified number of times as indicated in the chart for your chosen tool/die combination. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center and space subsequent crimps uniformly along the splice. For lugs, make the first crimp at the inner end of the barrel and space crimps uniformly along the barrel.
- Finalize the Connection
After crimping, use a clean cloth to wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor that may have been displaced from the connection area.
