How to Install LCN Copper Compression Connectors, Lugs, and Splices

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of LCN copper compression connectors, lugs, and splices, including cable preparation and crimping procedures.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Crimping tool, Appropriate die set, Wire brush

Supplies needed:

LCN Copper Compression Connector, Electrical cable

  1. Review Safety and Compatibility

WARNING: Risk of shock, disconnect power before installation. CAUTION: This product should be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Confirm compatibility of the copper connector (LCN CU, CTL-L, or MS type) and cable size.

  2. Prepare the Cable

Carefully strip the cable insulation, ensuring no damage occurs to the cable's strands.

  3. Clean the Cable End

Using a wire brush (e.g., ABB catalog number WWB1), thoroughly brush the cable side that will be inserted into the connector to remove any oxidation.

  4. Insert Cable into Connector

Fully insert the prepared cable into the connector barrel until it bottoms out.

  5. Crimp the Connector

Consult the 'Tool and Die Index' in the product documentation to select the appropriate crimping tool and die combination for your specific cable size. Crimp the connector the number of times indicated in the chart for your chosen tool/die combination. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center and space subsequent crimps uniformly. For lugs, make the first crimp at the inner end of the barrel and space crimps uniformly along the barrel.

  6. Clean Excess Inhibitor

Wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor that may have been expelled during the crimping process.
