Overview

The ABB K656RLR-P0380-S is a 600 Amp, 15/25kV deadbreak replacement elbow designed for medium-voltage power distribution systems. This fully shielded, submersible component ensures safe, reliable electrical connections in utility, industrial, and commercial applications. The deadbreak design allows for hot-stick operation in de-energized states, minimizing exposure during maintenance or fault conditions. The elbow accommodates cable insulation diameters from 1.725 inches to 1.935 inches, providing a precise fit for medium-voltage cables. It features an aluminum compression lug compatible with compressed stranded conductors sized at 700/750 kcmil or compacted solid conductors up to 900 kcmil, ensuring low-resistance, high-current terminations. Installation is simplified with a cold-shrinkable jacket seal that provides environmental protection against moisture and contaminants without requiring heat. The integrated test point enables safe circuit testing without de-energizing the entire system, streamlining troubleshooting and maintenance. This replacement elbow extends cable connection points by approximately 20 inches, making it ideal for livefront to deadfront switchgear conversions where cable length is insufficient. The fully rated 15/25kV, 600 Amp design meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386, with ratings including 8.3kV phase-to-ground and 14.4kV phase-to-phase for 15kV class, and 16.2kV phase-to-ground and 28kV phase-to-phase for 25kV class. It also features a 95kV BIL impulse withstand and 34kV AC one-minute withstand for 15kV class, with 140kV BIL and 45kV AC withstand for 25kV class. The 100% peroxide-cured construction includes insulation and conductive EPDM materials for durability and performance in demanding environments. The K656RLR-P0380-S is a critical component for maintaining the integrity and safety of medium-voltage power distribution systems.

How to Install the K655RLR Shielded High-Voltage Connector

Install and assemble the K655RLR connector on compatible high-voltage cable and mating apparatus. This guide covers safe de-energized installation, cable preparation, connector assembly, grounding, and voltage testing.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Hex wrench, Torque wrench with 9/16 in. socket, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device, Approved safety solvent, Rag, Wire brush, Assembly tool 650ATY or 600RRT (if used)

Supplies needed:

Lubricant supplied with kit or Elastimold-approved lubricant, Cable adapter, Compression connector, Elbow, Receptacle housing, Insulating plug or mating part, Retaining ring, Bolt and washer prepack, Nylon venting rod, Test point cap, No. 14 AWG copper wire or equivalent, Suitable connectors for grounding, Tape marker, Silicone grease

  1. Prepare safely and inspect all parts

De-energize all apparatus before starting. Do not touch energized products. Check the package contents for completeness and damage, verify all components fit the cable and mating parts, and read the full instructions before proceeding. Keep the work area clean and have all tools and supplies ready.

  2. Assemble and lubricate the elbow and mating parts

Remove protective caps from the elbow and mating parts. Clean and lubricate the 'I' adapter and the inside of the elbow with the supplied or approved lubricant only. Insert the 'I' adapter into the elbow until the spade contact bottoms inside the elbow, and position the flat side of the 'I' contact away from the apparatus. If a threaded stud is needed on the mating part, hand tighten it into place, then clean and lubricate both mating surfaces.

  3. Connect the elbow to the mating apparatus

Align the elbow so the flat side of the 'I' contact faces away from the apparatus. Push the elbow onto the mating part and line up the hole in the 'I' adapter lug with the stud on the mating part. Engage the opposite end of the elbow with the mating part, hand tighten the threads, and torque the mating part according to its supplied instructions. Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized.

  4. Prepare the cable and receptacle housing

Slide the receptacle housing onto the cable. Cut the cable 1 1/4 in. from the center of the bolt hole in the 'I' adapter, remove the semi-con shield 11 1/8 in. from the bolt hole center, and restore the shield with a semi-con sleeve if needed. Wrap two turns of tape 1 in. from the end of the semi-con shield as a marker, bevel the insulation end at a 45-degree angle about 1/4 in. back, and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved safety solvent by wiping from the cable end toward the out

  5. Install the cable adapter and set conductor length

Apply lubricant sparingly to the cable and inside of the cable adapter. Slide the adapter small-end first over the cable with a twisting motion until it is flush with the tape marker. Trim protruding insulation even with the adapter end without nicking the adapter or conductor. Verify the exposed conductor length is between 4 9/16 in. and 5 5/8 in.; if not, redo the assembly.

  6. Install the retaining ring and compression connector

Assemble the aluminum retaining ring over the conductor and snug it firmly against the cable adapter. Tighten the socket head screw with the supplied hex wrench until the wrench twists, then confirm the exposed conductor measures 4 5/16 in. to 4 7/8 in. Remove the compression connector cap, wire brush aluminum conductor if used, and fully insert the conductor into the crimp barrel containing inhibitor.

  7. Align, crimp, and bolt the connector assembly

Bolt the crimp connector onto the 'I' adapter and tighten it to 25 ft-lb as a final check before crimping. Train the cable into its final position and mark alignment points on the retaining ring and crimp connector. Remove the bolted contact, confirm the marks align, crimp the connectors per the connector instructions, and rotate each crimp 90 or 180 degrees. Verify the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar does not exceed 7 7/8 in. Then assemble the washers and bolt with,

  8. Secure the final splice and seat the receptacle

Align the flat surface of the 'I' adapter with the flat surface on the crimp connector with no gaps. Install the flat washer against the spade contact, then the Belleville washer concave side down, then the hex-head bolt. Hand tighten first, then torque the bolt to 50 to 60 ft-lb with a torque wrench and 9/16 in. socket. Do not move or reposition the assembly after tightening. Clean and lubricate the outside of the cable adapter and 'I' adapter, slide the receptacle housing into position, insert

  9. Use the assembly tool and ground the cable

Insert the nylon venting rod and, if using the 650ATY tool, place the U-shaped yoke over the 'I' adapter and the C-shaped yoke over the receptacle housing, then raise the handle to slide the housing over the splice section. If using the 600RRT tool, keep hands away from the threaded rod and guide shaft while turning the hex nuts to move the housing. Remove the vent rod, rotate the receptacle about 1/8 turn clockwise and then 1/8 turn counterclockwise to seat it, and connect No. 14 AWG copper or
