How to Install K656 Series Deadbreak Receptacles
This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe and proper installation of K656 series deadbreak receptacles, including cable preparation, crimping, and final assembly for high voltage applications.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Hex wrench, Torque wrench with 15/16 inch socket, Wire brush (for aluminum cable), Cable stripping tools (for jacket, semi-con, insulation), Rag, Approved safety solvent, Assembly tool (650ATY or 600RRT)
Supplies needed:
Lubricant (supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved), No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s), Conductive copper strip (for flat metallic tape shielded cable)
- Prepare for Installation and Inspect Components
Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect all components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Confirm the package contents are complete and undamaged. Read the entire instructions before proceeding and gather all required tools. DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s). Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment.
- Prepare the Cable and Slide Initial Components
Wipe the outer jacket of the cable clean for a distance of 38 inches. Cut the cable end squarely to ensure maximum available length for crimp growth. If using an ECS grounding device, slide the ECS tube onto the cable a distance of 38 inches. Then, slide the receptacle housing onto the cable a distance of 30 inches.
- Perform Cable Specific Preparation
Follow the specific cable preparation procedure based on your cable type. For Jacketed Concentric Neutral Cable (Part A), remove the cable jacket 13-3/4 inches from the end, bend neutral wires back, and remove the semi-con 10-1/4 inches from the end. For Flat Metallic Tape Shielded Cable with Semi-con Shield (Part B), remove the outer jacket 13-3/4 inches from the end, remove the tape shield 11-1/4 inches from the end, and remove the semi-con shield 10-1/4 inches from the end. In both cases, bevel the insulation end at a 45-degree angle approximately 1/4 inch back and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved safety solvent, wiping from the cable end toward the outer jacket.
- Install Cable Adapter and Retaining Ring
Apply supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant sparingly along the prepared cable and generously inside the cable adapter. Slide the adapter, small end first, over the cable with a twisting motion until its end is flush with the tape marker (if applicable). Remove any protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter, ensuring not to cut or nick the adapter or conductor. The exposed conductor should measure 4 3/4 to 5 inches. Assemble the aluminum retaining ring over the conductor and snug it firmly against the cable adapter. Using the provided hex wrench, tighten the socket head screw hand tight. Confirm the exposed conductor now measures 4 3/8 to 4 3/4 inches.
- Crimp the Connector
Remove the protective cap from the crimp connector. If using aluminum cable, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it into the crimp connector, which contains inhibitor. Measure the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar; it should be 6 3/4 to 7 inches. Confirm the bolt holes in the crimp connectors are positioned properly to align with the bolt holes of the mating part. Crimp the connectors following the instructions packaged with them, rotating each crimp 90 or 180 degrees. After crimping, re-measure the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar, ensuring it is still 6 3/4 to 7 inches.
- Assemble and Torque Bolts
Assemble the washers and bolt in the following order: flat washer against the spade contact, Belleville washer (concave side down), then the hex-head bolt. Hand tighten all bolts. Clean and lubricate the splice area. Using a torque wrench with a 15/16 inch socket, tighten all bolts to 50 to 60 ft. lbs. Do not attempt to move or reposition any part of the assembly after the bolts are tightened.
- Install Receptacle Housing and Vent
Apply supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant generously to the outside of the cable adapter, the splice section, and the inside mating surface of the receptacle housing. Slide the receptacle housing over the cable adapter and up to the edge of the interface. Insert the nylon venting rod (supplied). Use an assembly tool (650ATY or 600RRT) to slowly slide the receptacle housing completely over the splice section. Once fully seated, remove the venting rod. WARNING: If using the 600RRT tool, do not place your hand on the threaded rod or guide shaft with the assembly tool in place.
- Complete Grounding and Final Checks
If an ECS grounding device is used, complete its installation according to its specific instructions. Connect a short length of No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent) to the grounding eyes of the housings, making a small loop and twisting tightly without damaging the eye. Connect this wire to ground. Check all cable adapters to ensure they are located properly and remove all vinyl tape markers. Remember to repeat steps 4 through 7 for any remaining cables to be joined.
