How to Install K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and wiring of K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors on high voltage apparatus, including cable preparation, lug crimping, and grounding procedures.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device, Torque wrench (for mating parts and L-Kits), Suitable grounding connector
Supplies needed:
K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector kit (Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug, Lubricant, Stud Prepack), No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent), Silicone lubricant, Waterproofing material (for cable jacket)
- Ensure De-energized State and Prepare Work Area
De-energize all apparatus in the work area. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility. Gather all required tools and supplies, and maintain cleanliness.
- Prepare the Cable
Position the cable with enough slack. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4" (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24" (610mm). Remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable according to the specific cable type (e.g., Unishield, Jacketed, Non-Jacketed) and the provided diagrams, ensuring correct insulation and semi-con shield dimensions.
- Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4" (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare and Crimp Conductor
Remove protruding cable insulation, cutting it even with the cable adapter. Ensure exposed conductor length is 4-1/4" to 4-9/16" (108mm-116mm). For copper, fully insert conductor into compression lug. For aluminum, wire brush and immediately insert. Measure "Check Dimension" (< 6-3/8") before crimping. Crimp lug per its instructions. Wipe excess inhibitor. Verify distance from lug end to cable adapter is 6-3/8" to 7-1/8" (162mm-181mm) after crimping.
- Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Confirm the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker. Reposition if necessary, then remove the tape marker.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Product
Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud supplied with the elbow into the mating part. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.
- Connect Opposite End Mating Product (if applicable)
Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its specific instructions. If an insulating plug is used, clean and lubricate its inner surface and place it on the elbow, pushing until it snaps into place.
- Ground the Cable Shield
Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. Ensure the cable shield is grounded, either through a grounding device or an alternate method. Waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Perform Voltage Test (Optional but Recommended)
If performing a voltage test, remove the test point cap with a hotstick by peeling it off at an angle. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Treat the elbow as energized until the "no voltage" indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
