How to Install K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation of K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed for fully shielded, submersible high-voltage cable connections.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Cable cutters, Utility knife, Beveling tool, Cleaning solvent, Rags, Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Crimping tool (specific to lug), Torque wrench, Hotstick, Voltage sensing device (for capacitive test points)
Supplies needed:
K655/K675LR Elbow Connector, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug (if applicable), Silicone Lubricant, Threaded Stud, No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent ampacity), Grounding connector, HV insulated caps (if replacing shipping covers), Tape marker, Waterproofing material
- De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components
Before beginning, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Verify the package contents are complete and undamaged. Inspect all components for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors if the circuit will be submerged or energized later. Failure to de-energize can result in serious or fatal injury.
- Prepare Cable for Connection
Assemble the cable in its final position with enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24” (610mm) or up to the bent back concentric neutral wires. Follow specific cable preparation steps (A, B, or C) based on cable type (e.g., remove outer jacket, prepare shield as shown in diagrams).
- Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare Conductor and Crimp Lug
Remove protruding cable insulation flush with the cable adapter, ensuring not to nick the adapter or conductor. Exposed conductor length must be 4-1/4” to 4-9/16” (108mm-116mm). Insert conductor fully into the compression lug (wire brush aluminum conductors first). Before crimping, verify 'Check Dimension' is less than 6-3/8”. Crimp the lug per its instructions. Wipe excess inhibitor. After crimping, the distance from lug end to cable adapter must be 6-3/8” to 7-1/8” (162mm-181mm).
- Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Product
Remove protective caps from the elbow and mating part. If needed, hand tighten the supplied threaded stud into the mating part. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and mating part. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the compression lug hole with the stud. Insert the mating part for the opposite end, engage threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part per its instructions. DANGER: DO NOT CONNECT/DISCONNECT OR ENERGIZE MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED or DISCONNECTED.
- Install Insulating Plug (If Applicable)
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap on the elbow and push down firmly until it snaps into place. Proceed to voltage test directions.
- Ground the Cable Shield
Insert one end of a wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper ampacity) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded; follow instructions for any grounding device used, or an alternate method if none is present. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Perform Voltage Test
Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling at an angle. WARNING: This is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage meters. Use a suitable sensing device for capacitive test points to check for energization. Contamination or incorrect equipment can cause false readings. Treat the elbow as energized until 'no voltage' is confirmed by other means to prevent injury. After testing, clean, lubricate the cap with silicone, and replace it.
