Overview

The ABB K655ETP-SP-H0230DRGS is a 25kV, 600 Amp deadbreak test and ground connector kit designed for medium-voltage cable applications. This kit accommodates cable insulation diameters from 0.850 inch to 1.050 inch, making it suitable for 230 to #1 stranded/compressed or 1/0 solid/compact conductors. The core component is a high-strength aluminum compression lug, factory-assembled with a non-removable stud (SP designation) to ensure consistent performance and eliminate installation errors in high-voltage environments. Key features include an insulated cap for electrical safety during operation and a cold-shrinkable jacket seal for environmental protection against moisture and contaminants. The connector kit meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386, with a maximum phase-to-phase voltage of 25 kV and a BIL impulse rating of 125kV (1.2 x 50 microsecond wave). It supports continuous current ratings of 600A and momentary current ratings of 25kA for 10 cycles. Its compatibility with standard conductor sizes simplifies installation while adhering to stringent electrical safety standards. The blue loadbreak interface (where applicable) provides enhanced visibility and seating indication, further improving operational reliability.

How to Install and Remove the 160DRG/167DRG Insulated Cap with Ground Lead

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and removal of the ELASTIMOLD 160DRG and 167DRG insulated caps with ground lead on 15kV class loadbreak bushing interfaces. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before installation.

Estimated time: 20m

Tools needed:

Full insulated hotstick type live-line tool

Supplies needed:

160DRG or 167DRG Insulated Cap with Ground Lead, Lubricant

  1. Connect Grounding Wire

Connect the free end of the electrostatic grounding wire to the system ground. Ensure enough slack is left for hot-stick operation of the insulated cap. CAUTION: Train the grounding wire to prevent contact with the bushing interface during operation. WARNING: If the ground lead disconnects during operation, do not attempt to reattach it without first removing the insulated cap from the bushing using a hotstick.

  2. Prepare Insulated Cap

Remove the protective cover from the insulated cap. Lubricate the cap's internal mating surface using only the supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricants. Do not substitute lubricants, as others may harm the product. Keep the internal mating surface free from dirt and grime. Always replace the protective cover when the cap is not in use.

  3. Install Insulated Cap

Firmly attach a hotstick to the insulated cap's pulling eye. Insert the male contact of the insulated cap into the loadbreak bushing. Push the cap home with a fast, firm, straight motion, ensuring it is fully mated and the locking ring is seated. Detach the hotstick from the insulated cap.

  4. Remove Insulated Cap

To remove the cap, attach a hotstick to the pulling eye. Before pulling, rotate the insulated cap clockwise while it is in the mated position to break surface friction. Pull the cap off with a fast, firm, straight motion. After removal, disconnect the electrostatic grounding wire from the system ground and replace the protective cover on the insulated cap to keep its internal surface clean.
