Overview

The ABB K655BEA2 is a 25kV 600 Series Deadbreak Stick-Op Bushing Adapter designed for medium-voltage deadbreak connector systems. This EPDM molded rubber adapter converts a 600 Amp bushing interface to a 200 Amp loadbreak tap, enabling safe and efficient connection and disconnection operations using a 600AT operating tool. The unit meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386 with a 16.2kV phase-to-ground operating voltage, 28kV phase-to-phase, and 140kV BIL impulse withstand. It provides 200 Amp continuous and loadbreak ratings with 10kA symmetrical momentary and fault close capability. The hex-broach design ensures proper torque installation, while the peroxide-cured insulation and jacket deliver long-term reliability. Constructed with an all-copper current path, this adapter is compatible with Elastimold K650LB systems and is essential for substations, switchgear, and critical power distribution infrastructure where medium-voltage connections require safe loadbreak operations. The adapter's deadbreak design eliminates the need for de-energizing the system during installation or maintenance, reducing downtime and enhancing operational safety.

How to Install the K655BEA Deadbreak Bushing Converter

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the K655BEA Deadbreak Bushing Converter, including grounding, lubrication, and assembly.

Estimated time: 45m

Tools needed:

600-AT Operating Tool, Hot-stick

Supplies needed:

K655BEA Deadbreak Bushing Converter, Lubricant (supplied or ELASTIMOLD® approved), #14 AWG Copper Wire (or equivalent), Suitable Connector (for grounding wire), Mating Product (Insulated Cap, Grounding/Loadbreak Elbow, or Elbow Arrester)

  1. Ground the Bushing Converter

Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment. Insert one end of a #14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent) through the bushing converter's grounding eye, leaving sufficient length for connection to the apparatus bushing. Form a small loop and twist tightly, ensuring not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to system ground using a suitable connector.

  2. Clean and Lubricate Bushing Converter Interfaces

Clean and lubricate the bushing converter interfaces using the supplied lubricant or an ELASTIMOLD® approved lubricant. Maintain cleanliness on all mating surfaces throughout this process.

  3. Assemble Bushing Converter onto Apparatus Bushing

Insert the 600-AT operating tool into the tap plug until it is fully seated. Attach a hot-stick to the eye of the 600-AT. Assemble the bushing converter onto the apparatus bushing by turning the hot-stick clockwise while simultaneously pushing the bushing converter towards the apparatus bushing. Continue rotating clockwise until a ratcheting sound indicates proper assembly torque. Remove the 600-AT from the bushing converter.

  4. Prepare and Install Mating Product

Clean and lubricate the chosen mating product (insulated cap, grounding elbow, loadbreak elbow, or elbow arrester) with the supplied or ELASTIMOLD® approved lubricant. Install the mating product onto the bushing interface by following its specific installation instructions.
