How to Install a Deadbreak Junction with Universal Mounting

This guide provides detailed instructions for installing a 15/25/35kV, 600/900 Ampere Deadbreak Junction using the universal mounting method, including assembly, grounding, and initial preparation for operation.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Wrenches (for 3/8" and 1/2" hex nuts and cap screws), Wire strippers, Multimeter, Marking tool

Supplies needed:

Deadbreak Junction, Base Bracket, Base Plate, Universal Brackets (4), Mounting Hardware Prepack, Suitable fasteners (for attaching universal brackets to mounting surface), Grounding wire (No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded), ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant, HV insulated caps (for unused bushings)

  1. De-energize and Prepare Mounting Location

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Verify the circuit is de-energized using appropriate safety procedures and equipment. Determine the desired location for the junction assembly. Using the base plate as a template, place it on the mounting surface and mark all four slot locations for the universal brackets.

  2. Attach Initial Universal Brackets

Attach two (2) universal brackets to the marked slot locations on the flat mounting surface using suitable fasteners. Tighten these fasteners securely to prevent any movement during operation.

  3. Assemble Remaining Universal Brackets

Attach the remaining two (2) universal brackets to the two brackets already mounted on the surface. Use the supplied 3/8” hex head cap screws, external tooth lock washers, and 3/8” hex nuts. Mount them at the desired angle and tighten securely.

  4. Assemble Junction to Base Bracket and Base Plate

Assemble the deadbreak junction to the base bracket assembly and base plate. Use two (2) 1/2” hex head cap screws, two (2) 1/2” split lock washers, and two (2) 1/2” hex nuts. Attach them to the center mounting holes on the bracket assembly and tighten securely.

  5. Attach Junction Assembly to Universal Brackets

Attach the complete deadbreak junction assembly to the universal brackets using the supplied 1/2” hex head cap screws, 1/2” split lock washers, and 1/2” hex nuts. Ensure the parking stand is in the upright position and tighten all hardware securely.

  6. Ground the Assembly

Connect a grounding wire (No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded) to the grounding lug provided on the base bracket. Ensure the base bracket assembly and the junction’s black conductive jacket are properly grounded to prevent electrical hazards.

  7. Prepare Operating Interfaces

Remove all protective shipping caps from the operating interfaces. Clean each interface thoroughly and lubricate them with an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. DO NOT substitute other lubricants, as they may harm the product or its mating parts.

  8. Install Insulated Caps on Unused Bushings

If not all operating interfaces will be utilized, install appropriate HV insulated caps on any unused bushings before energizing the circuit. Do not use the protective shipping caps for this purpose, as they are not insulated.
