How to Install an ELASTIMOLD J4 Deadbreak Junction (Universal Mount)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing an ELASTIMOLD J4 deadbreak junction using the universal mount method. It covers mounting, assembly, grounding, and initial preparation of operating interfaces.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wrench Set, Socket Set, Wire Strippers, Screwdriver
Supplies needed:
Suitable fasteners (for surface mounting), Mounting Hardware Prepack (supplied), Grounding wire (No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded), ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant, HV insulated caps (if needed for unused interfaces)
- Verify De-energized State and Personnel Safety
Before beginning installation, ensure all apparatus and deadbreak connectors are completely de-energized. This product must only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Failure to follow these safety instructions can result in serious injury or death.
- Mark Mounting Locations for Base Plate
Determine the desired location for the junction assembly on a flat surface. Use the base plate as a template, place it on the surface, and accurately mark all four slot locations for subsequent bracket attachment.
- Secure First Pair of Universal Brackets
Attach two (2) universal brackets to the marked slot locations on the flat surface using suitable fasteners (user-supplied). Tighten these fasteners securely to prevent any movement of the brackets during operation.
- Assemble Remaining Universal Brackets
Attach the remaining two (2) universal brackets to the two (2) universal brackets already mounted on the surface. Use the supplied 3/8” hex head cap screws, external tooth lock washers, and 3/8” hex nuts. Position them at the desired angle and tighten securely.
- Mount Junction to Base Bracket Assembly
Assemble the deadbreak junction to the base bracket assembly and base plate. Use two (2) supplied 1/2” hex head cap screws, two (2) 1/2” split lock washers, and two (2) 1/2” hex nuts. Attach them to the center mounting holes on the bracket assembly and tighten securely.
- Secure Junction Assembly to Universal Brackets
Attach the entire deadbreak junction assembly (now with base bracket and base plate) to the universal brackets previously mounted on the surface. Use the supplied 1/2” hex head cap screws, 1/2” split lock washers, and 1/2” hex nuts. Ensure the parking stand is in the upright position and tighten all hardware securely.
- Ground the Base Bracket and Junction Jacket
The base bracket assembly and the junction’s black conductive jacket must be properly grounded. Connect a grounding wire (No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded) to the grounding lug provided on the base bracket. Ensure a secure and reliable ground connection.
- Prepare Operating Interfaces for Connection
Remove any protective shipping caps from the operating interfaces. Clean each interface thoroughly and lubricate them with an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. Do not substitute other lubricants, as they may harm the product. If not all operating interfaces will be utilized, install appropriate HV insulated caps on the unused bushings before energizing the circuit. Do not use shipping caps for this purpose.
