How to Install a Deadbreak Junction (Universal Mount)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing 15/25/35kV, 600/900 AMPERE Two-, Three-, or Four-Point Deadbreak Junctions using the Universal Mount method. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation and follow all safety protocols for high voltage equipment. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Wrench, Wire strippers, Marking tool
Supplies needed:
Deadbreak Junction, Base Bracket, Base Plate, Universal Brackets (4), 3/8” Hex Head Cap Screws, External Tooth Lock Washers, 3/8” Hex Nuts, 1/2” Hex Head Cap Screws, 1/2” Split Lock Washers, 1/2” Hex Nuts, Suitable fasteners (user supplied for mounting to surface), Grounding wire (No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded), ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s)
- Determine Mounting Location and Mark Slots
Determine the desired location for the junction assembly. Use the base plate as a template, place it on the mounting surface, and mark the slot locations for drilling or fastener placement.
- Attach Initial Universal Brackets
Secure two universal brackets to the marked locations on the flat surface using suitable fasteners. Tighten them securely to prevent any movement during operation.
- Assemble Remaining Universal Brackets
Attach the remaining two universal brackets to the two brackets already mounted on the surface at the desired angle using the supplied 3/8” hex head cap screws, external tooth lock washers, and 3/8” hex nuts. Tighten securely.
- Assemble Deadbreak Junction to Base Bracket and Base Plate
Assemble the deadbreak junction to the base bracket assembly and base plate. Use two 1/2” hex head cap screws, two 1/2” split lock washers, and two 1/2” hex nuts, attaching them to the center mounting holes on the bracket assembly. Tighten securely.
- Attach Junction Assembly to Universal Brackets
Attach the complete deadbreak junction assembly to the universal brackets using the supplied 1/2” hex head cap screws, 1/2” split lock washers, and 1/2” hex nuts. Ensure the parking stand is in an upright position and tighten all hardware securely.
- Ground the Junction Assembly
Ground the base bracket assembly and the junction's black conductive jacket. A grounding lug is provided on the base bracket for this purpose, accommodating wire sizes from No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded. Connect the appropriate grounding wire securely.
- Prepare for Operation
Remove all protective shipping caps from the operating interfaces and clean them. Lubricate each interface with an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant; do not substitute. If not all operating interfaces are utilized, install appropriate HV insulated caps on the unused bushings before energization. Do not use protective shipping caps for this function as they are not insulated.
