How to Install a Deadbreak Junction with Universal Mount
This guide provides comprehensive instructions for installing a two-, three-, or four-point deadbreak junction using the universal mount method. It covers determining the location, assembling brackets, mounting the junction, and ensuring proper grounding for safe operation. All apparatus must be de-energized during installation.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Wrenches, Drill, Wire strippers, Measuring tape, Marking tool
Supplies needed:
Deadbreak Junction, Mounting Hardware Prepack, Suitable fasteners (for mounting to surface), Grounding wire, ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant, HV insulated caps (if needed)
- Determine Mounting Location and Mark Slots
Determine the desired location for the deadbreak junction assembly. Use the base plate as a template, place it on the mounting surface, and accurately mark all slot locations for drilling or fastener placement.
- Attach Primary Universal Brackets
Secure two universal brackets to the marked slot locations on the flat surface using suitable fasteners. Ensure these brackets are tightened securely to prevent any movement during operation.
- Assemble Secondary Universal Brackets
Attach the remaining two universal brackets to the two brackets already mounted on the surface. Position them at the desired angle and secure them using the supplied hardware, which includes 3/8” hex head cap screws, external tooth lock washers, and 3/8” hex nuts. Tighten all connections securely.
- Assemble Junction to Base Bracket and Plate
Connect the deadbreak junction to the base bracket assembly and the base plate. Use two 1/2” hex head cap screws, two 1/2” split lock washers, and two 1/2” hex nuts, attaching them to the center mounting holes on the bracket assembly. Tighten these components securely.
- Mount Junction Assembly to Universal Brackets
Attach the fully assembled deadbreak junction to the universal brackets using the supplied hardware, including 1/2” hex head cap screws, 1/2” split lock washers, and 1/2” hex nuts. Verify that the parking stand is in the upright position and tighten all connections securely.
- Ground the Junction Assembly
Ground the base bracket assembly and the junction’s black conductive jacket. Connect a suitable grounding wire (accommodating No. 2 solid to 1/0 stranded) to the grounding lug provided on the base bracket for this purpose.
- Prepare Operating Interfaces for Energization
Before energizing, remove all protective shipping caps and thoroughly clean the operating interfaces. Lubricate each interface with an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant; do not use substitute lubricants. If any operating interfaces remain unused, install appropriate HV insulated caps on those bushings. Do not use the protective shipping caps as they are not insulated.
