Overview

The ABB E-Z-Ground Figure 8 Copper Compression Ground Rod Tap Connector (SKU: GR58-40250) is a precision-engineered grounding solution for industrial and utility applications. Designed for copper cables ranging from 4/0 AWG to 250 kcmil, this connector ensures a secure, low-resistance bond to 5/8-inch ground rods. Made from high-conductivity copper, it resists corrosion and maintains performance in harsh environments, including outdoor installations and high-moisture areas. The compression connection type delivers a permanent, vibration-resistant joint that exceeds NEC and UL standards for grounding reliability. With a compact height of 2-9/64 inches, it fits in tight spaces while providing ample clearance for tools during installation. The figure-8 design simplifies alignment between the cable and ground rod, reducing installation time by up to 30% compared to traditional clamp-style connectors. Ideal for electrical contractors, utility workers, and industrial maintenance teams, the GR58-40250 is part of ABB’s trusted E-Z-Ground series, known for its durability and ease of use. Whether used in substations, commercial buildings, or renewable energy projects, this connector ensures compliance with grounding system requirements while minimizing long-term maintenance costs.

How to Install the GR58-40250 Ground Grid Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the GR58-40250 ground grid connector on ground rods.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Hydraulic crimping tool, Knurling tool (optional)

Supplies needed:

Ground grid connector, Cable (4/0 AWG to 250 MCM), Mounting screws (if applicable)

  1. Prepare the cable

Clean the cable of all visible dirt using a rough cloth or brush and ensure a bright copper finish by wire brushing or a similar process.

  2. Insert the cable into the connector

Insert the prepared end of the cable into the ground grid connector, ensuring that it protrudes at least 3/4” beyond the connector.

  3. Crimp the connector

Use a hydraulic crimping tool with die 15G121R to make two crimps on the connector to secure the cable. Ensure that the crimp is tight and secure.

  4. Optional knurling

If using smooth ground rods, apply a knurling tool to the rod for better grip before installing the connector.

  5. Verify installation

Check that the connector is securely attached and that there are no loose connections. Ensure all tools are removed from the installation area.
