This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the assembly and wiring of the FYC/DYC (copper) or FYA/DYA (aluminum) street lighting kit. Ensure power is disconnected and installation is performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Measuring tool, Wire strippers, Crimping tool (with appropriate dies from Table 2), Wood dowel, Wire brush (for aluminum cable/lugs), Wrench or socket (for bolted assembly)
Supplies needed:
Load side cable, Run connection cable, Lubricant, Fuse (13/32" x 1 1/2", 600V 30A max, non-glass body) or Connecting link, Nut, Bolt, Belleville washers, Lugs, HM53 inhibitor or equivalent (for aluminum cable/lugs)
- Prepare Load Side Housing
Measure the cable diameter. Refer to Table 1 in the documentation to select the corresponding section on the load side (plug) housing. Cut off the remaining sections of the housing to the size referenced in the Range column of Table 1.
- Prepare Load Side Cable
Thoroughly clean approximately 8 inches along the load side cable end. Apply lubricant and insert the cable through the small hole in the load side (plug) housing. Push the cable through a sufficient distance to permit 3/8 inch for stripping of insulation. Strip the insulation a distance of 3/8 inch as shown in the documentation.
- Crimp Fuse Holder to Cable
Insert the stripped cable into the crimp barrel of the fuse holder. Crimp the cable into the fuse holder. Refer to Table 2 in the documentation for suggested tool and die types based on conductor size.
- Assemble Fuse Holder into Load Side Housing
Apply lubricant lightly to the outside of the fuse holder. Place the wood dowel into the socket and position the free end of the dowel against a firm surface. Push the load side (plug) housing forward until the fuse holder snaps into position. Wipe off any excess lubricant.
- Insert Fuse or Connecting Link
Insert a 13/32 inch by 1 1/2 inch fuse (600 Volt 30 Amp max.) or a connecting link into the load side (plug) housing. WARNING: DO NOT use a glass body fuse.
- Prepare Y-Type Housing and Run Cable
For run connection: Select and cut the correct cut-off ring on the Y-Type housing for the cable being used. Cut and bevel the cable insulation. Apply lubricant to the end of the cable and the cut opening of the housing. Slide the cable through until it extends 2 to 3 inches beyond the housing. Strip the insulation to fit compression lugs. CAUTION: Do not over strip.
- Crimp Lugs and Prepare for Aluminum (if applicable)
Crimp the lugs with the proper crimping tool. Ensure the pad portions of the lugs are back to back. For aluminum only: Wire brush the pads of the lugs, apply HM53 inhibitor or equivalent on pads, and wipe off any excess inhibitor.
- Assemble and Tighten Bolted Assembly
Assemble the insert using the provided nut, bolt, Belleville washers, and lugs as shown in the illustration. Tighten the bolted assembly securely.
- Assemble Insert in Y-Type Housing
Apply lubricant as shown in the documentation. Slide the Y-Type housing up to the bottom of the line end insert. Push the line end insert into the opening of the Y-Type housing. While pulling on the cables and holding onto the Y-Type housing, slide the housing toward the line end insert. Push the line end insert until it is fully seated in the housing.
- Final Connection of Load Side to Line End
Lubricate the male and female components. Insert the load side (plug) housing, with the installed link or fuse clip, into the line end insert until it is securely connected.
