How to Install FLOOD-SEAL 95 Heat Shrink Connector Kits
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Thomas & Betts 'FLOOD-SEAL' 95 Heat Shrink Connector Kits. Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable electrical codes, standards, and safety rules to prevent electric shock.
Estimated time: 20m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Wrench, Butane torch OR Propane torch OR 500°F electric heat gun
Supplies needed:
FLOOD-SEAL 95 Heat Shrink Connector Kit, Cable, Electrical joint compound
- Prepare the Cable Conductor
Carefully remove the insulation from the cable end to expose the conductor. After removing insulation, thoroughly wire brush the exposed conductor to ensure a clean surface for connection.
- Position the Heat Shrink Sleeve
Before crimping the lug, slip the heat shrink sleeve over the prepared cable end. Ensure it is positioned far enough back on the cable to allow for easy lug crimping without obstruction.
- Crimp and Connect the Lug
Crimp the appropriate lug onto the prepared conductor end. Immediately wipe away any excess joint compound from the crimped area. Securely bolt the lug to the contact pad on the FLOOD-SEAL connector bus.
- Position Sleeve Over Lug
Slide the heat shrink sleeve forward over the crimped lug until it firmly butts against the connector bus, covering the entire lug and the connection point.
- Shrink Sleeve at Bus End
Apply heat evenly to the sleeve at the connector bus end. Continue shrinking until a visible bead of mastic appears at the sleeve end, indicating a complete seal. Use a butane torch, propane torch, or 500°F electric heat gun. Do not use Acetylene.
- Shrink Sleeve Over Terminal Lug
Working away from the connector bus, continue applying heat to shrink the sleeve tightly over the terminal lug. Move the heat source to a new position as visual shrinkage occurs to ensure even application.
- Shrink Sleeve Over Cable End
Finally, shrink the remainder of the sleeve over the cable end. The seal is complete when a bead of mastic appears at this end, ensuring a watertight and secure connection along the entire length of the sleeve.
