Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Screwdriver, Wire strippers, Crimping tool
Supplies needed:
Battery connectors, Heat shrink insulation tubing, KOPR-SHIELD compound, Torque wrench
- Disconnect battery cables
Before starting the installation, disconnect the battery cables from the battery posts. Note the location of the positive and negative terminals for correct reinstallation.
- Prepare the cable
Carefully strip the insulation from the battery cable without nicking the strands. Ensure the conductor strands are clean and free of dirt.
- Select and prepare the connector
Choose the appropriate connector based on the gauge of the battery cable. If using heat shrink tubing, slide it onto the cable now. If using KOPR-SHIELD compound, apply it to the bare conductors.
- Crimp the connector
Insert the stripped end of the cable into the connector until it bottoms out. Position the connector in the crimping tool and compress it according to the colored lines on the connector.
- Apply heat shrink insulation
If heat shrink insulators are used, position them over the connector barrel and apply heat until they shrink, ensuring they cover the connector barrel and overlap the wire insulation by at least 1.5 inches.
- Install the connectors
Connect the positive lead to the positive battery terminal and the negative lead to the negative terminal. Use a torque wrench to apply a torque of 10 to 15 ft. lbs. for proper installation.
