How to Install Aluminum Compression Lugs and Splices (Type ATL and ASP)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Thomas & Betts Type ATL and ASP aluminum compression lugs and splices for stranded, compressed, compact aluminum and copper conductors.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush (T&B catalog number WWB1 or equivalent), Crimping tool, Appropriate crimping dies
Supplies needed:
Aluminum compression lugs or splices (Type ATL and ASP), Aluminum or copper conductors, Oxide inhibitor (if not pre-applied)
- Ensure Electrical Safety
WARNING: ELECTRICAL HAZARD! Before beginning any work, turn off all power to the electrical circuit to prevent electric shock.
- Verify Connector and Cable Size
Check the wire size marked on the aluminum connector (Type ATL or ASP) to confirm it is the correct size for the actual aluminum or copper cable you intend to use.
- Prepare Cable Conductor
Carefully strip the insulation from the cable, ensuring not to damage the conductor's strands. Then, use a wire brush (e.g., T&B catalog number WWB1) to thoroughly brush the conductor side that will be inserted into the connector.
- Insert Conductor into Connector
Fully insert the prepared conductor into the barrel of the aluminum compression lug or splice.
- Crimp the Connector
Refer to the provided Tool and Die Index. Select the appropriate crimping tool and die combination for your specific cable size. Crimp the connector the number of times indicated in the chart. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center and space subsequent crimps uniformly. For lugs, make the first crimp at the inner end of the barrel and space crimps uniformly along the barrel.
- Clean the Connection
After crimping, wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor that may be present on the connector and conductor.
