How to Install APS Series Aluminum Dual Rated Split Bolt Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing APS Series aluminum dual-rated split bolt connectors, including conductor preparation, insertion, and proper torquing according to specifications.
Estimated time: 15m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Torque wrench
Supplies needed:
Approved oxide inhibitor
- Ensure Safety and Qualified Installation
WARNING: Disconnect all power before beginning installation to prevent risk of shock. This product must be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with National Electrical Code or Canadian Electrical Code requirements.
- Prepare Wire Conductors
Strip the insulation from both the aluminum and copper wires to the appropriate length for the connector. Use a wire brush to thoroughly clean the aluminum conductors to remove any oxides. Apply an approved oxide inhibitor to the cleaned aluminum conductors to prevent future oxidation.
- Position and Insert Conductors
Carefully insert the copper conductor under the spacer within the split bolt connector. Then, insert the aluminum conductor on top of the spacer. Ensure both conductors are fully inserted into the connector and are contacting the full surface of the spacer, with the copper conductor separated from the aluminum conductor by the spacer.
- Torque the Connector to Specification
Using a torque wrench, tighten the connector according to the specified torque values for your conductor size. For 8 AWG, torque to 80 LBS-IN. For 6, 4 AWG, torque to 165 LBS-IN. For 2, 1 AWG, torque to 275 LBS-IN. For 1/0, 2/0 AWG, torque to 385 LBS-IN. For 4/0 AWG, torque to 500 LBS-IN. For 350 kcmil, torque to 650 LBS-IN. For 500 kcmil, torque to 825 LBS-IN.
