Overview

The ABB Type ADR-ALCUL (SKU: ADR80) is a single-conductor, one-hole mount mechanical connector designed for medium to high-current industrial applications. This product accommodates conductor sizes ranging from 300 kcmil to 800 kcmil, making it ideal for heavy-duty installations where large cross-sectional conductors are required. The ADR80 features a one-hole design for simplified mounting to compatible surfaces or enclosures, ensuring reliable electrical contact and mechanical support. Key specifications include a maximum conductor range of 800 kcmil and a minimum of 300 kcmil, with dimensions of 6 5/16 inches in length, 1 3/4 inches in width, and 1 7/8 inches in height. The connector is designed for NEMA spacing of 1 3/4 inches centers, providing compatibility with standard industrial hardware. For conductors 600 kcmil and larger, the ADR80 includes a double row of set screws (D suffix) for enhanced stability. Common applications include power distribution panels, motor control centers, and industrial switchgear where high-current conductors must be terminated or supported. The ADR80’s design supports efficient cable management and reduces the risk of loose connections in high-vibration environments. As part of ABB’s Installation Products line, the ADR80 is engineered for durability and broad compatibility across industrial electrical systems.

How to Install Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors with aluminum or copper conductors, including conductor preparation and proper torque application.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush, Torque wrench

Supplies needed:

Blackburn Contax Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound, Mounting hardware, Flat and Belleville washers

  1. De-energize Circuit and Check Conductor Compatibility

CAUTION: De-energize the circuit before installing connectors to prevent electrical shock. Check the conductor size marked on the connector to ensure it is the correct connector for the conductor size you intend to use.

  2. Strip Conductor Insulation

Carefully strip the conductor insulation, avoiding any damage to the conductor strands. Use the length of the connector barrel to measure the appropriate strip length (see Figure 1 in the original documentation).

  3. Prepare Conductor and Apply Oxide Inhibitor

Wire brush the conductor. If using an aluminum conductor, apply Blackburn® Contax® Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound. Fully insert the conductor into the connector and wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor (see Figure 2 & 3 in the original documentation).

  4. Torque the Connector Setscrew

Identify the maximum conductor size the connector accommodates. Apply the recommended tightening torque to the setscrew in accordance with TABLE 1 in the original documentation (see Figure 4 in the original documentation). Each connector has one tightening torque range regardless of the conductor size it accommodates.

  5. Apply Oxide Inhibitor to Contact Surface

Prior to mounting the connector, apply Blackburn® Contax® Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound to the flat contact surface of the connector.

  6. Torque Mounting Hardware

Torque the mounting hardware to the values shown in TABLE 2 in the original documentation (see Figure 4 in the original documentation). For good installation practice, use flat and Belleville washers in conjunction with the mounting hardware, although the connectors will perform satisfactorily without them.
