How to Install Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors

Complete guide for installing Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors with aluminum or copper conductors, including preparation, wiring, and torque specifications for proper and safe installation.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush, Torque wrench

Supplies needed:

Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors, Blackburn Contax Type CT oxide inhibiting compound, Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound, Mounting hardware, Flat washers, Belleville washers, Aluminum or copper conductors

  1. De-energize the Circuit

Before beginning any installation, ensure the electrical circuit is completely de-energized to prevent electrical shock. Verify the absence of voltage using appropriate testing equipment.

  2. Verify Conductor and Connector Compatibility

Check the conductor size marked on the connector to confirm it is the correct connector for the specific conductor size you intend to use.

  3. Strip Conductor Insulation

Carefully strip the conductor insulation. Use the length of the connector barrel as a guide for the strip length, and avoid any damage to the conductor strands during this process.

  4. Prepare and Insert Conductor

Wire brush the conductor thoroughly. If using an aluminum conductor, apply Blackburn® Contax® Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound. Fully insert the prepared conductor into the connector barrel and wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor.

  5. Torque Connector Setscrew

Apply the recommended tightening torque to the setscrew of the connector. Refer to TABLE 1 in the product documentation for the specific torque values based on the maximum conductor size the connector accommodates.

  6. Apply Oxide Inhibitor to Contact Surface

Prior to mounting the connector, apply Blackburn® Contax® Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound to the flat contact surface of the connector to ensure optimal electrical connection and corrosion prevention.

  7. Mount Connector and Torque Hardware

Mount the connector using the appropriate mounting hardware. Torque the mounting hardware to the values specified in TABLE 2 of the product documentation. For best installation practice, use flat and Belleville washers in conjunction with the mounting hardware.
