This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors with aluminum or copper conductors, including conductor preparation and proper torque application.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Torque wrench, Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
Blackburn Contax Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound, Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors, Mounting hardware, Flat washers, Belleville washers
- De-energize and Verify Connector Size
CAUTION: De-energize the power supply before installing connectors. Check the conductor size marked on the connector to ensure it is the correct connector for the conductor size you intend to use.
- Strip Conductor Insulation
Carefully strip the conductor insulation. Use the length of the connector barrel to measure the appropriate strip length, avoiding any damage to the conductor strands.
- Prepare and Insert Conductor
Wire brush the conductor. If using an aluminum conductor, apply Blackburn® Contax® Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound. Fully insert the prepared conductor into the connector, then wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor.
- Torque the Connector Setscrew
Apply the recommended tightening torque to the setscrew in accordance with TABLE 1 (refer to the original document for values). Each connector has one tightening torque range regardless of the conductor size it accommodates.
- Apply Oxide Inhibitor to Contact Surface
Prior to mounting the connector, apply Blackburn® Contax® Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound to the flat contact surface of the connector.
- Torque Mounting Hardware
Torque the mounting hardware to the values shown in TABLE 2 (refer to the original document for values). For good installation practice, use flat and Belleville washers in conjunction with the mounting hardware, although connectors will perform satisfactorily without them.
