How to Install Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing Blackburn Aluminum Dual Rated Connectors with aluminum or copper conductors, including preparation, insertion, and proper torquing.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush, Torque wrench

Supplies needed:

Oxide inhibiting compound, Flat washers, Belleville washers

  1. De-energize Circuit

Before beginning any installation, ensure the circuit is completely de-energized to prevent electrical shock. Verify with appropriate testing equipment.

  2. Verify Conductor and Connector Size

Check the conductor size marked on the connector to ensure it is the correct connector for the conductor size you are using.

  3. Strip Conductor Insulation

Carefully strip the conductor insulation, using the length of the connector barrel as a guide for the strip length. Avoid any damage to the conductor strands.

  4. Prepare and Insert Conductor

Wire brush the conductor. If using an aluminum conductor, apply Blackburn® Contax® Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound. Fully insert the prepared conductor into the connector and wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor.

  5. Tighten Connector Setscrew

Apply the recommended tightening torque to the setscrew of the connector in accordance with TABLE 1. Refer to the connector's maximum conductor size to find the correct torque value.

  6. Apply Oxide Inhibitor to Contact Surface

Prior to mounting the connector, apply Blackburn® Contax® Type CT or Weaver Type CP oxide inhibiting compound to the flat contact surface of the connector.

  7. Torque Mounting Hardware

Torque the mounting hardware to the values shown in TABLE 2. For good installation practice, use flat and Belleville washers in conjunction with the mounting hardware, though they are not strictly required.
