How to Install 756/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and wiring of 756/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors on 35kV class systems. It covers cable preparation, connector assembly, and grounding procedures for high voltage apparatus.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable preparation tools (strippers, insulation removal, beveling tool), Wire brush (for aluminum conductors), Crimping tool (with appropriate dies), Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device (for capacitive test points), Torque wrench, Suitable grounding connector

Supplies needed:

756/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector Kit (Elbow, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug, Crimp connector, Lubricant, Stud Prepack), Compatible cable, Grounding wire (minimum No. 14 AWG Copper), Waterproofing material (for cable jacket, recommended)

  1. Prepare the Cable for Connection

Position the cable in its final assembled location with sufficient slack. Clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm). Prepare the cable end by removing the outer jacket (if applicable), semi-con shield, and insulation to the specified dimensions (e.g., 10-3/8”, 11-3/8”, 13-5/8” for insulation, semi-con shield, and tape marker respectively), following the specific instructions for your cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed, Unishield, or lead sheath).

  2. Install Cable Adapter and Compression Lug

Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker. Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter, ensuring not to cut or nick the adapter or conductor. Verify the exposed conductor length is between 4-3/8” to 4-3/4” (111mm-121mm); redo if incorrect. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the compression lug. For copper, fully insert the conductor. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping (should be less than 7” (178mm)). Crimp the compression lug according to its supplied instructions. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the compression lug and cable adapter surface. Verify the distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter is between 6-7/8” to 7-5/8” (175mm-194mm); redo if incorrect.

  3. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker. If not, reposition the cable adapter. Remove the tape marker.

  4. Connect to Mating Apparatus

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during this step. Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into the mating part, if the mating part is not already equipped with a stud. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, keeping surfaces clean. Push the elbow onto the mating part, carefully lining up the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.

  5. Complete Opposite End Connection (if applicable)

Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow. Engage the threads and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to the instructions supplied with that specific mating part.

  6. Install Insulating Plug and Ground the Cable Shield

If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap on the elbow and push down hard until it snaps into place. Insert one end of a grounding wire (with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to make a small loop, ensuring not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded; follow the instructions supplied with any grounding device or use an alternate method. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.

  7. Perform Voltage Test (if applicable)

If the ELASTIMOLD® connector is equipped with an integral capacitance test point, use it to determine if the circuit is energized. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the specific meter used. Test with a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points. Contamination, moisture, dirt, or incorrect equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
