How to Install a Push-in Liquidtight Flexible Metal Conduit Fitting
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for properly installing a push-in liquidtight flexible metal conduit fitting, ensuring a secure and liquidtight connection for electrical systems. Installation must be performed by a qualified electrician.
Estimated time: 20m
Tools needed:
Sharp hacksaw, Band saw, Torque wrench, Measuring tape
Supplies needed:
Listed liquidtight flexible metal conduit, New fitting (if ground cone is removed)
- Observe Safety Warnings and Qualification Requirements
WARNING: RISK OF SHOCK, DISCONNECT POWER BEFORE INSTALLATION. WARNING: FAILURE TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN LOSS OF EQUIPMENT, INJURY, AND/OR DEATH. This product must be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with the National Electrical Code or Canadian Electrical Code.
- Prepare the Conduit
Cut the liquidtight flexible metal conduit using a sharp hacksaw or band saw, ensuring the end cut is clean and square. Remove any burrs or frayed material from the cut edge. Verify that the conduit complies with the internal and external diameters specified in UL 360 and CSA C22.2 No. 56.
- Prepare the Fitting
DO NOT DISASSEMBLE THE FITTING. Lightly spin the Gland Nut down until minor resistance is encountered. At this point, the Sealing Ring and Ground Cone chamfer are in contact.
- Insert the Conduit into the Fitting
Align and carefully push the conduit onto the exposed end of the Ground Cone. Once the end of the conduit has started into the throat of the Sealing Ring, firmly push the conduit completely in until it bottoms out. To ensure full insertion, mark the conduit from the cut end at the depth specified in the installation table (e.g., 13/16” for 3/8” and 1/2” trade sizes, 7/8” for 3/4”, 1-3/16” for 1”). When fully inserted, the mark should be level with the top of the sealing ring. DO NOT PULL BACK ON THE CONDUIT ONCE IT IS FULLY INSERTED. Note: Conduit that is difficult to insert may be poorly cut or may not comply with UL and CSA dimensional requirements. The Ground Cones are for one-time use only; if removed, replace with a new fitting.
- Secure the Gland Nut
Torque the Gland Nut to the specified value in the installation table (e.g., 200 lbs.-in. for 3/8” trade size, 300 lbs.-in. for 1/2”, 500 lbs.-in. for 3/4”, 700 lbs.-in. for 1”). The fitting must be fully torqued for proper performance.
