The joints can be used with copper or aluminum conductors, supporting a wide range of sizes up to 1250 kcmil.
What are the two styles of PCJ power cable joints?
Style 1 is for straight splicing of two similar cables. Style 2 uses separate cable adapters for transition splicing between different cable sizes.
What is the continuous current rating for PCJ joints?
The continuous current rating for PCJ power cable joints is equal to that of the cable rating.
What is the short-time current rating for PCJ joints?
The short-time current rating is equal to that of the cable rating, up to 35 kA.
What voltage classes are available for PCJ joints?
Elastimold PCJ power cable joints are available in 15 kV, 25 kV, and 35 kV classes.
What is the phase-to-ground voltage for the 15 kV class?
For the 15 kV class, the phase-to-ground voltage is 8.7 kV.
What is the BIL impulse withstand for the 35 kV class?
The 35 kV class has a BIL impulse withstand of 300 kV (1.2 x 50 μsec. wave).
What is the corona extinction voltage for the 25 kV class?
For the 25 kV class, the corona extinction voltage is 22 kV with 3 pC sensitivity.
What cable types are compatible with PCJ power cable joints?
They are designed for UD cable with concentric neutral and extruded insulation shielding. They also work with fabric-tape shielded or lead-jacketed cables using proper adapters.
Can copper connectors be used on aluminum conductors?
No, copper compression connectors are suitable for copper-to-copper connections only and should not be used on aluminum conductors.
How to Install the 35PCJ1Q Straight Joint
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the permanent, fully shielded, and submersible installation of the 35PCJ1Q straight joint for aluminum to aluminum and/or aluminum to copper conductor, wire shielded cables.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Cable knife, Insulation stripping tool, Measuring tape, Wire-brush, Crimping tool, T&B WT3D tool (for 35kV only)
Supplies needed:
Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Connector (USER SUPPLIED), DELTECt Cable ties (TYD5135, for 35kV only), #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent, Inhibitor
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Safety Review
Verify package contents for completeness and damage. Confirm all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Read the entire installation instructions thoroughly before beginning. Ensure all required tools are at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices.
- Prepare Cables for Joint Centerline
Overlap both cables and cut them to 12 inches (305mm) from the joint centerline to ensure sufficient shield wire length. Remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 37 inches (940mm) and Cable 2 to 21 inches (530mm). Fold back the shield wires. Cut both cables precisely at the joint centerline.
- Prepare Cable 1 and Store Housing
Taper the edge of Cable 1 insulation from 1/2 inch to 1-1/2 inches (13mm to 38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield. Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Slide the housing onto Cable 1, positioning it up to the shield wires.
- Prepare Cables for Splice Installation
Carefully remove the cable insulation from both cables. Subsequently, carefully remove the insulation shield from both cables. Exercise extreme caution to avoid cutting or nicking the cable insulation or conductor during this process.
- Install the Splice
If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush them thoroughly and immediately insert them into the splice. Check the dimension against the "Max Check Before" table provided with the splice; if it exceeds, redo the assembly. Crimp the splice according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. Check the distance between cable insulations against the "Max Check After" table; if it exceeds, redo the assembly. Remove any sharp protrusions or burrs generated during crimping and ensure all metal chips/filings are removed from the splice and joint assembly area before sliding the joint. Clean the cables where indicated and lubricate them in the direction of the arrows to create a build-up or ramp of lubricant at the edge of the insulation shield.
- Position the Joint Housing
Slide the housing into its final position. Ensure proper positioning is achieved by observing and equalizing the deformation of the joint ends caused by the underlying cable insulation shield.
- Install 35kV Specific Components (if applicable)
For 35kV installations ONLY: Install two DELTECt Cable ties (TYD5135) on each end of the cable entrance. Position the outer ties approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) from the edge of the splice, then install the second ties approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) from the first, ensuring an offset of the locking heads. Use the T&B WT3D tool (not included) to tighten and trim the ties. Remove and discard the yellow pin from the joint grounding eye.
- Complete Grounding and Jacket Reconstruction
Retrain the shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint. Insert one shield wire from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye, and repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use a separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Reconstruct the cable jacket (where applicable) over both cables and the joint housing.
