What are Elastimold PCJ power cable joints used for?
They are used for straight splicing of two similar cables or transition splicing of different cable sizes, up to 1250 kcmil. They provide a permanent, fully shielded, fully submersible splice.
What is the AC withstand for a 15 kV PCJ joint?
For a 15 kV class PCJ joint, the AC withstand at 60 Hz for 1 minute is 35 kV.
What is the short-time current rating of PCJ joints?
The short-time current rating of PCJ power cable joints is equal to that of the cable rating, up to 35 kA.
What is the BIL impulse withstand for a 35 kV PCJ joint?
For a 35 kV class PCJ joint, the BIL impulse withstand (1.2 x 50 μsec. wave) is 300 kV.
Can copper connectors be used with aluminum conductors?
No, copper compression connectors are suitable for splicing copper conductors to copper conductors only. They should not be used on aluminum conductors.
What type of connector is included in a standard PCJ kit?
A standard kit includes an aluminum compression connector suitable for splicing aluminum to aluminum or aluminum to copper conductors. An all-copper connector is required for copper-to-copper connections.
What safety standards do PCJ power cable joints meet?
The shield design meets the IEEE 592 standard. The connectors meet ANSI 119.4 Class A and Class 3 ratings.
What is the continuous current rating of PCJ joints?
The continuous current rating of PCJ power cable joints is equal to that of the cable rating.
What is the pull force rating for PCJ joints?
The pin-and-socket interlock design of the PCJ power cable joints can withstand a pull force of up to 500 lb.
What cable types are PCJ power cable joints designed for?
They are designed for use with UD cable with concentric neutral and extruded insulation shielding. They also work with fabric-tape shielded or lead-jacketed cables using proper adapters.
How to Install the 35PCJ1 Series Straight Joint
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 35PCJ1 series permanent, fully shielded, and submersible straight joint for wire shielded cables.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Utility knife, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Deburring tool, T&B WT3D tool (for 35kV only)
Supplies needed:
35PCJ1 Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), #14 AWG Copper Wire (or equivalent, if needed), Grounding wire connector, DELTEC Cable ties TYD5135 (for 35kV only)
- Perform Pre-Installation Safety and Inspection
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare Cables for Joint Centerline
Overlap both cables and cut them to 12 inches (305mm) from the joint's centerline. Where applicable, remove the cable jacket of Cable 1 to 37 inches (940mm) and Cable 2 to 21 inches (530mm). Fold back the shield wires. Finally, cut both cables precisely at the joint's centerline.
- Prepare Cable 1 and Store Housing
Taper the edge of Cable 1's insulation shield from 1/2 inch to 1-1/2 inches (13mm to 38mm). Clean and lubricate the insulation shield. Lubricate the inside bore of the joint housing on both ends. Carefully slide the housing onto Cable 1, positioning it up to the shield wires.
- Prepare Cables for Splice Installation
Carefully remove the cable insulation and then the insulation shield from both Cable 1 and Cable 2. Exercise extreme caution to avoid cutting or nicking the cable insulation or conductor. Refer to the provided 'X' and 'Y' dimensions table for precise removal lengths based on conductor size (e.g., 500-750 MCM, 1000 MCM).
- Install the Splice
If conductors are aluminum, wire-brush them thoroughly and immediately insert them into the splice. Check the dimension against the 'Max Check Before' table; if it exceeds, redo the assembly. Crimp the splice according to its manufacturer's recommendations. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. Check the distance between cable insulations against the 'Max Check After' table; if it exceeds, redo the assembly. Remove any sharp protrusions or burrs from the crimped splice and ensure all metal chips/filings are removed from the joint assembly area. Clean the cables where indicated and lubricate them to create a build-up at the insulation shield's edge.
- Complete Joint Assembly
Slide the joint housing into its final position, ensuring proper placement by observing and equalizing the deformation of the joint ends caused by the underlying cable insulation shield. For 35kV ONLY: Install two DELTEC Cable ties on each end of the cable entrance, approximately 1/4 inch from the splice edge, with the second tie 1/4 inch from the first and locking heads offset. Use a T&B WT3D tool to tighten and trim ties. Remove and discard the yellow pin from the joint grounding eye. Retrain and secure the shield wires to the ends of the joint. Insert one shield wire from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye, and repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Finally, reconstruct the cable jacket (where applicable) over both cables and the joint housing.
