How to Install 274J2-5 Loadbreak Junctions
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 274J2-5, J3, and J4 two-, three-, and four-point loadbreak junctions, including mounting, grounding, and connecting mating products.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Drill, Wrench or Socket Set, Wire Strippers, Cleaning Cloth
Supplies needed:
Mounting Hardware, Lubricant, Grounding Lug (if mounting on insulating surface), Ground Wire (14AWG minimum, if mounting on insulating surface), Round Yellow Marker
- Prepare for Installation
Before beginning, ensure all apparatus are de-energized. Carefully inspect all parts for any damage, verify their rating, and confirm compatibility with mating parts. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace them with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors if the circuit will be submerged or energized.
- Determine Location and Drill Mounting Holes
Determine the desired location for the junction assembly. Using the provided dimensions (4.000 x 2.000 for J2, 2.500 x 3.000 for J3, 1.125 x 4.000 for J4, with 0.375 Dia. holes), drill the necessary mounting holes into the chosen flat surface.
- Mount and Ground the Junction Assembly
Assemble the loadbreak junction, shield plate, and hold-down brackets using the supplied fasteners. Attach the complete assembly to the prepared flat surface and securely tighten all fasteners to prevent any movement during operation. IMPORTANT: The shield plate, hold-down brackets, and black conductive rubber shield MUST be grounded. If mounting on a conductive and grounded surface, no additional ground is necessary. For insulating mounting surfaces, attach a grounding lug (not provided) with one of the mounting bolts and connect a minimum 14AWG ground wire from the lug to a ground bus.
- Clean, Lubricate, and Install Mating Products
Thoroughly wipe the bushing interface clean to remove any contaminants. Apply the supplied lubricant generously to the cleaned bushing interface. Install the mating products (e.g., insulated caps or elbow connectors) to the bushing insert, carefully following the specific instructions provided with those mating products.
- Verify Mating Product Seating
After installing an insulated cap or elbow, verify its complete assembly. Proper seating is indicated when no portion of the yellow band is visible when viewed from the side of the connection.
- Attach Yellow Marker
Remove the adhesive-backed round yellow marker supplied with the kit and attach it to the mounting surface in a location where it will be clearly visible to the operator.
