How to Install the 274FLR Loadbreak Fused Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 274FLR Loadbreak Fused Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, component assembly, and neutral connections for high voltage applications.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Torque-limiting Allen Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Hotstick (for operation)
Supplies needed:
Cable Half Housing, Elbow Half Housing, Fuse, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Connector, Hose Clamp, Lubricant, No. 14 AWG Copper Wire, Appropriate cable shield or grounding device (if needed)
- De-energize and Inspect Components
Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized to prevent serious injury or fatality. Inspect all components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Read the entire installation instructions thoroughly.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Using the bushing centerline as a reference, cut excess cable, then remove the cable jacket and insulation shield according to the provided diagram and distances ('A' + 7-3/8" for jacket, 'A' for cable cut-off). If using a cable seal kit, follow its instructions; otherwise, unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires back over the jacket.
- Prepare the Cable End and Install Compression Lug
Cut 1-1/8 inches squarely from the cable end, taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug onto the conductor, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Crimp the unthreaded end of the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor.
- Remove Insulation Shield and Clean
Remove the insulation shield 5-1/2 inches from the end of the compression lug. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Lubricate and Insert Cable into Cable Half Housing
Apply the supplied lubricant to the outside of the connector, the cable insulation, the conductive shield, and the cable entrance end of the Fused Elbow cable half. Insert the connector and cable into the cable half of the Fused Elbow until the top end of the connector protrudes beyond surface 'A' to allow proper fuse tightening.
- Install and Hand-Tighten the Fuse
Insert the threaded terminal end of the fuse into the cable half of the Fused Elbow and thread it into the cable connector. HAND TIGHTEN the fuse. CAUTION: The fuse stud will fracture if over-torqued. After hand-tightening, pull the housing up against the bottom of the tightened fuse.
- Assemble and Lock the Probe Connector
Assemble the probe connector to the fuse terminal. Rotate the probe connector so its flats are perpendicular to the bushing with which it will mate. Lock the probe connector in position by tightening the setscrews using the special torque-limiting allen wrench supplied. Rotate the cable half of the Fused Elbow so the test point is perpendicular to the flats on the probe connector.
- Assemble Elbow Halves and Insert Probe
Apply lubricant to the elbow half of the fused elbow and assemble it to the cable half, ensuring the cuff overlaps by 3/4 inch and the probe connector faces the opening. The two test points should be in line. Insert the probe into the probe connector, pushing the cable if necessary for alignment. Start threads by hand, then tighten using the torque-limiting allen wrench until it bends and remains bent.
- Secure with Hose Clamp and Connect Neutral Wires
Position the hose clamp as shown in the diagram and tighten it, but DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. Using a separate No. 14 AWG copper wire, insert one end through each grounding eye on the elbow and cable housings and twist tightly. Twist all neutral wires together and connect to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation.
- Lubricate for Final Connection (De-energized)
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. The elbow is now ready for connection to the bushing using a hotstick, following proper operating instructions.
