This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle, designed for connecting solid dielectric type cables to other Elastimold products or electrical apparatus.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Rag
Supplies needed:
151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle, Conductor Contact (male), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied), Crimp Chart, Approved solvent, Elastimold bail, Copper wire (#14 AWG or equivalent), Sealing material
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Safety Measures
Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating products. Gather all required tools and maintain a clean work environment throughout the procedure. If the product has protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before energizing or submerging the circuit.
- Prepare Cable Jacket
For jacketed concentric neutral cables, cut and remove 8 inches of the cable jacket from the end, ensuring sufficient neutral wires for grounding. For copper tape shield cables, cut and remove 7 1/2 inches of the cable jacket, then remove the copper tape shield 6 1/2 inches from the cable end. Refer to specific grounding device instructions if using an ECS or MA device for outer jacket cut back.
- Prepare Cable Insulation and Conductor
Remove 7/8 to 1 inch of cable insulation and conductive shield. For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable, remove 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 inches. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Cut the conductor squarely; do not pencil the cut.
- Crimp Conductor Contact
Insert the bared conductor fully into the crimp barrel, which contains an inhibitor. Crimp the socket terminal onto the conductor following the supplied crimp chart. Start crimps at the imprinted crimp line and rotate each successive crimp 90 degrees. If using aluminum cable, carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Prepare Semi-Conductive Shield and Clean Insulation
Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7 9/16 to 7 5/8 inches back from the end of the pin using a straight, smooth, 'squared' cut, taking care not to cut or nick the insulation. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the outer jacket and insulation with an approved solvent to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue, wiping from the cable end towards the outer jacket. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it now per its instructions.
- Lubricate Cable and Receptacle Housing
Remove the protective cap from the straight receptacle, keeping the cable insulation and receptacle clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable and to the inside of the receptacle housing. Do not substitute lubricants, as other types may harm the product or its mating part.
- Insert Cable into Receptacle Housing
Push the prepared cable into the receptacle housing until the base of the pin chamfer is flush with the inside face of the receptacle. If the receptacle will not be immediately connected, replace the protective cover (note: the shipping cover is for dirt protection only and is not an insulating device; use an Elastimold insulating plug K150DP if insulation is required).
- Connect to Mating Plug
Lubricate the nose of the mating plug with silicone grease. Insert the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1 3/4 inches), ensuring the rod is not cut. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection using an Elastimold bail.
- Ground the Cable
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of customer-supplied #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
