How to Install the 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle, including cable preparation, conductor crimping, assembly, and connection to a mating plug or grounding system for 15kV or 25kV class systems.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush, Rag

Supplies needed:

151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle, Conductor Contact (male), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied), Cable (solid dielectric type), Approved solvent, Silicone grease, Elastimold bail, #14 AWG copper wire (optional), Terminal connectors

  1. Ensure Safety and Inspect Components

DANGER: De-energize all apparatus before installation or removal. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety practices. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating products. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage to the product and serious or fatal injury.

  2. Prepare Cable Jacket and Shield

For jacketed concentric neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end, ensuring sufficient neutral wires for grounding. For copper tape shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7 1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6 1/2 inches from the cable end. Refer to specific instructions if using an ECS or MA grounding device.

  3. Prepare Conductor and Crimp Terminal

Remove 7/8 to 1 inch (or 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 inches for #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable) of cable insulation and conductive shield. Cut squarely, do not pencil. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert them into the crimp barrel which contains inhibitor. Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, ensuring it remains fully seated. Start crimps at the crimp line and rotate each successive crimp 90 degrees. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation if using aluminum cable.

  4. Prepare Insulation and Clean Cable

Remove the semi-conductive shield 7 9/16 to 7 5/8 inches back from the end of the pin with a straight, smooth, squared cut; do not cut or nick the insulation. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue by wiping with a rag wet with an approved solvent, always wiping from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket. Install an ECS or MA grounding device now if applicable.

  5. Lubricate and Assemble Receptacle

Remove the protective cap from the straight receptacle, keeping the cable insulation and receptacle clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown and to the inside of the housing; do not substitute other lubricants as they may be harmful. Push the cable into the housing until the base of the pin chamfer is flush with the inside face of the receptacle. If not connecting immediately, replace the protective cover (note: shipping cover is not an insulating device).

  6. Connect to Mating Plug

If connecting to a mating plug, lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1 3/4 inches), taking care not to cut the rod. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with an Elastimold bail. CAUTION: A bailing arrangement is required when this product is used with any mating Elastimold deadbreak product.

  7. Ground the Cable

If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14 AWG or equivalent copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
