How to Install T&B Liquidtight Connectors

This guide provides the proper method for installing T&B liquidtight connectors to ensure high performance and reliability in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Always disconnect power before installation.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Hacksaw (32 Tooth/ln. no. set), Power band saw (24-32 Tooth/ln. wavy set, for high production), Smooth jaw wrench (for PVC coated connectors), Torque wrench, Metal jig (optional, for conduit cutting)

Supplies needed:

Liquidtight flexible metallic conduit, T&B liquidtight connector (e.g., 5000, 7000, 9000, or 3300 series), T&B 140 series locknuts (for knockout applications, purchase separately), T&B 5260 series sealing gaskets (for knockout applications, purchase separately), PVC cement (if needed for PVC coated connectors), Hand protection (gloves), Eye protection (safety glasses)

  1. Observe Safety Precautions

WARNING: Risk of shock, disconnect power before installation. CAUTION: Product should be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Wear hand protection and eye protection throughout the installation process.

  2. Prepare the Flexible Conduit

Cut the flexible conduit with a clean, square end cut. For best results, use a metal jig (available from conduit manufacturers) and a 32 Tooth/ln. no. set, sharp hacksaw. For high production, a 24-32 Tooth/ln. wavy set power band saw, not exceeding 400 feet per minute, can be used. Do not use an abrasive wheel for cutting.

  3. Assemble Standard Connector Components

For 5000, 7000, and 9000 series connectors, slide the gland nut onto the flexible conduit. Next, slide on the nylon sealing ring. Finally, thread in the Safe Edge™ Cone. Ensure components are oriented correctly as shown in Figure 2 of the installation guide.

  4. Install PVC Coated Connectors (if applicable)

For PVC coated 3300 series connectors, follow the same assembly method as standard connectors (Step 3). Tighten the connector with a smooth jaw wrench to avoid damaging the coating. If gouging occurs, exposing the metal, apply PVC cement to maintain corrosion protection.

  5. Install Connectors in Knockout Boxes (if applicable)

For knockout applications, use T&B® 140 series locknuts and 5260 series sealing gaskets, which must be purchased separately. Ensure the 'O' ring is correctly positioned on the outside of the box, as indicated by 'Read Box side for correct position on outside of box' in Figure 3.

  6. Install Chase® Connector Assemblies (if applicable)

For 'Space Saver' Chase® connector assemblies (e.g., 5371 series), the lock-up can be made by either tightening the Chase® Nipple to the body or by turning the body onto the Chase® Nipple. Only the Chase® Nipple goes inside the knockout.

  7. Secure the Locknut and Tighten

Thread the locknut onto the connector body and tighten it to the specified torque using a torque wrench. Refer to the provided torque table for the correct value based on the fitting's trade size. For example, a 3/8" fitting requires 200 lb.-in., while a 2" fitting requires 1600 lb.-in. Ensure the connection is secure to maintain liquidtight integrity.
