This guide provides instructions for the proper installation of T&B liquidtight connectors with flexible metallic conduit, ensuring high performance and reliability in accordance with electrical codes.
Estimated time: 20m
Tools needed:
Hacksaw (32 Tooth/ln. no. set, sharp), Power band saw (optional, 24-32 Tooth/ln. wavy set, not more than 400’/minute), Metal jig (optional, for cutting conduit), Smooth jaw wrench (for PVC coated connectors), Torque wrench, Hand protection, Eye protection
Supplies needed:
Liquidtight flexible metallic conduit, T&B Liquidtight Connector (e.g., 5000, 7000, 9000, or 3300 series), T&B® 140 series locknuts (for knockout applications, purchase separately), T&B® 5260 series sealing gaskets (for knockout applications, purchase separately), PVC cement (if gouging occurs on PVC coated connectors)
- Prepare for Installation and Cut Conduit
WARNING: Disconnect power before installation to avoid risk of shock. CAUTION: Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Wear hand protection and eye protection. Cut the flexible conduit with a clean, square end. Use a metal jig and a sharp hacksaw (32 teeth/inch) or a power band saw (24-32 teeth/inch, not more than 400 ft/minute). Do NOT use an abrasive wheel.
- Assemble the Connector Components
For 5000, 7000, 9000, and PVC coated 3300 series connectors: Slide the gland nut onto the cut end of the flexible conduit. Slide the nylon sealing ring onto the conduit. Thread the Safe Edge™ Cone onto the conduit. For PVC coated connectors, use the same assembly method. If gouging occurs exposing metal during tightening, PVC cement is recommended.
- Install Connector into Knockout Box
Insert the connector body through the knockout opening in the box wall. Ensure the 'O' ring (if applicable, e.g., 5365-5370 series) is correctly positioned on the outside of the box. For knockout applications, use a T&B® 140 series locknut and a 5260 series sealing gasket (purchased separately). For 7000 and 9000 series, order the locknut separately. For 'Space Saver' Chase® connector assemblies (e.g., 5371 series), ensure only the Chase® Nipple goes inside the knockout, with the body outside.
- Secure the Connector
Thread the locknut onto the connector body from inside the knockout box. Tighten the locknut to the connector body using a torque wrench according to the specified torque values for your fitting's trade size (e.g., 3/8" = 200 lb-in, 1/2" = 300 lb-in, 3/4" = 500 lb-in, 1" = 700 lb-in, 1 1/4" = 1000 lb-in, 1 1/2" = 1200 lb-in, 2" = 1600 lb-in, 2 1/2" - 4" = 1600 lb-in). For Chase® connector assemblies, achieve lock-up by tightening the Chase® Nipple to the body or by turning the body onto the Chase® Nipple.
