How to Install Elastimold 273ELR/274ELR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of Elastimold 273ELR and 274ELR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on UD cable. It covers cable preparation, lug crimping, elbow assembly, grounding, and connection to a bushing.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Pin wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for voltage test), Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, Appropriate ground connector, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s)
- Prepare for Installation
DANGER: De-energize all apparatus before beginning installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. Inspect all package contents and components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Check threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. If supplied with shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before energizing the circuit.
- Prepare Cable and Install Compression Lug
Train the UD cable to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. For new installations, cut excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 'X' back from the cable end (e.g., 13 inches for 02509XXX). Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and carefully to avoid nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's CONTACT THREADED HOLE WITH THE BUSHING BORE. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown, then bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble Elbow and Connect Neutral
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant ONLY; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten with a wrench until the wrench bends. Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow, twisting it tight. Twist all neutral wires and the wire from the grounding eye together, then connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Ensure the area is clear of obstructions. Remove the insulated cap from the bushing using a hotstick. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Withdraw the elbow from the apparatus parking stand with a fast, straight, firm motion, keeping it away from a ground plane. Place the elbow connector receptacle over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact until the first slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface. Apply sufficient force. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
- Perform Voltage Test (274ELR only)
For 274ELR models with a test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points, following its manufacturer's directions. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination or wrong equipment can give false readings. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it tightly on the test point.
