How to Install Elastimold 273ELR/274ELR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of Elastimold 273ELR and 274ELR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, component assembly, and grounding procedures.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Pin wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wrench, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for voltage test point, if applicable)
Supplies needed:
Elastimold Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm Copper Wire, Grounding connector, HV insulated cap or connector (if replacing shipping covers), Silicone grease (for test point cap)
- Prepare for Installation
Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify proper fit of components with the cable and/or mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, replace damaged components. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Train and Prepare the Cable
Train the UD cable to ease future operation, ensuring at least 20 inches beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut the excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 13 inches back from the end of the cable. Carefully remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor.
- Install and Crimp the Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately after stripping. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Prepare Cable Insulation
Remove the insulation shield as shown in the documentation. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared finish.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with a wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together with the wire from the grounding eye and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug (De-energized)
Ensure the transformer and bushing are de-energized. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Connect the elbow to the bushing plug following operating instructions, using a full insulated hotstick. Do not operate by hand. Apply sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.
- (Optional) Perform Voltage Test (if 274ELR with test point)
If using a 274ELR with a test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it tightly on the test point.
