How to Install Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, assembly, and connection to a deadbreak bushing. Ensure all safety precautions are followed.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wrench, Cable cut-back template, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Fully insulated hot stick

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Lubricant (supplied), Hold-down Bail, UD cable, No. 14 AWG Copper Wire, Grounding connector

  1. Perform Pre-Installation Checks

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility. Verify the elbow housing cable entrance and compression lug sizes fit the cable. Check probe threads by hand-threading into the lug. Ensure all required tools are at hand and maintain cleanliness. If the test point cap is not installed, lubricate and install it.

  2. Train and Cut Cable

Train the UD cable to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508mm) extends beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut any excess cable squarely at the bushing's center line.

  3. Prepare Cable End

Prepare the cable using the cut-back template. Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216mm) from the cable end. Remove the shield and insulation, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare conductors, then immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor and aligning the threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the lug and cable. Remove the semi-con shield and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (3.2mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all conductive residue.

  4. Assemble Elbow Connector

Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread, then tighten with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Assemble Hold-down Bail

Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket, compressing the bail and inserting it securely into the brackets.

  6. Connect Concentric Neutral

Connect the concentric neutral. Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack for elbow operation.

  7. Connect Elbow to Bushing

DANGER: Ensure the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized before proceeding. Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, then lubricate with the supplied lubricant. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. DO NOT SEPARATE IF ENERGIZED.

  8. Secure Elbow with Bail

Secure the elbow with the hold-down bail. Pull the bail up over the crown of the elbow so the eyebolt aligns directly over the operating eye. Tighten the eyebolt clockwise to secure it in the elbow locator. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt to act as a stop, preventing excessive force on the elbow, ensuring it seats securely.
