How to Install Elastimold 273ELR/274ELR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the new installation and total replacement of Elastimold 273ELR (without test point) and 274ELR (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed to terminate UD cable.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Pin wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Probe wrench, Cable preparation tools (e.g., wire strippers, insulation removal tools), Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire or equivalent, Appropriate connector for grounding, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers), Silicone grease (for test point cap, if applicable)
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Cable Training
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility. Train the UD cable as shown in the documentation to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches beyond the end of the cable. For new installations, cut excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. For replacements, remove the old probe with a pin wrench, pull off the old elbow with a twisting motion, and cut off the old compression lug.
- Prepare the Cable and Install Compression Lug
Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 'X' inches back from the end of the cable (refer to documentation for 'X' dimension, e.g., 13 inches for 02509XXX). Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread inhibitor and position it so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug starting at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown, then bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Keep the insulation clean. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral Wires to Ground
Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires and the wire from the grounding eye together. Connect this twisted bundle to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
WARNING: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. After establishing firm footing and positive control, place the elbow connector receptacle area over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact into the bushing until the first slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface. Apply sufficient force to ensure the internal lock engages.
