How to Install Elastimold 02509XXX Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the new installation and wiring of Elastimold 273ELR/274ELR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed for terminating UD cable with concentric neutral and extruded insulation shielding to a 25kV class 200A loadbreak bushing.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Pin wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Cable cutting tool, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Wrench, Elastimold Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) Copper Wire, Appropriate Grounding Connector, Silicone Grease, HV Insulated Cap(s) or Connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)
- Prepare for Installation and Cable Training
Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace damaged components if resistance is met. Train the cable as shown in the documentation to ease future operation. For new installations, cut excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.
- Prepare the Cable End and Install Compression Lug
Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 13 inches back from the end of the cable (for 02509XXX series). Remove 9-1/2 inches of shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors thoroughly and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor and position it so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart (packaged with the lug), starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove 2-1/8 inches of insulation shield as shown in the documentation. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Housing and Probe
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied Elastimold lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Keep insulation clean. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off any excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together with the copper wire from the grounding eye. Connect the twisted neutral wires to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack is provided in the wires to allow for elbow operation.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing ONLY IF the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Loadbreak connectors must be operated with a full insulated "hotstick" type live-line tool. Do not operate by hand. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Place the elbow connector receptacle area over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact (arc follower portion) into the bushing until the first slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface. Apply sufficient force to ensure the lock engages.
