How to Install Elastimold 273ELR/274ELR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides instructions for the installation and initial setup of Elastimold 273ELR and 274ELR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed for terminating UD cable and connecting to 25kV class loadbreak bushings.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Pin wrench, Hotstick (live-line tool), Wire brush, Crimp tool, Torque wrench, Suitable voltage sensing device, Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
Elastimold 273ELR/274ELR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug (e.g., 02509XXX series), Probe, Elastimold-supplied lubricant, UD cable, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Grounding connector, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s)
- De-energize Apparatus and Train Cable
WARNING: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts. Only competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices should perform this installation. Train the UD cable to ease future operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. For new installations, cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.
- Prepare Cable for Lug Installation
Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 9-1/2 inches back from the end of the cable (for 02509XXX compression lugs). Carefully remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the product diagram. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble Elbow Housing and Probe
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Keep insulation clean. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off any excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with a wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect Concentric Neutral to Ground
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together with the wire from the grounding eye. Connect this twisted assembly to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
WARNING: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing only if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Place the elbow connector receptacle area over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact (arc follower portion) into the bushing until the first slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface. Apply sufficient force to ensure the internal lock is engaged. If the product was supplied with a protective shipping cover, remove it and replace it with the appropriate HV insulated cap or connector before submerging or energizing the circuit.
