How to Install Elastimold 273RLR/274RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing Elastimold 273RLR (without Test Point) and 274RLR (with Test Point) loadbreak replacement elbow connectors, converting livefront terminations to deadfront.
Tools needed:
Hotstick (full insulated live-line tool), Cable cutters, Cable stripping tool, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Probe wrench, Screwdriver (for hose clamp), Suitable sensing device (for 274RLR voltage test)
Supplies needed:
Elastimold 273RLR or 274RLR Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Hose Clamp, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate ground connector, Test point cap (for 274RLR, if not pre-assembled)
- Perform Initial Checks and Safety Precautions
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s). Inspect package contents for completeness and damage. Check all components for proper fit with cable and/or mating products. Verify probe threads by threading into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness. For 274RLR models, lubricate the test point cap with silicone grease and assemble tightly.
- De-energize and Remove Existing Livefront Termination
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before proceeding. Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator. Cut off and remove the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Remove the terminator housing from the cable.
- Prepare the Cable
Train cables to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Measure and cut the cable to 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. Check the distance from the end of the cut cable to the insulation shield. If less than 6-1/2 inches, proceed. If greater, consult your ELASTIMOLD representative. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, cutting squarely. DO NOT NICK THE CONDUCTOR.
- Install the Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart packaged with the compression lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble the Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE, as other lubricants may be harmful. Keep insulation clean of dirt and grime. Do not use excess grease or introduce any grease into the gap between the lug and the insulation. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Using a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown in the diagram and tighten snugly, but do not overtighten.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. After establishing firm footing and positive control, place the elbow connector receptacle area over the bushing plug. Insert the elbow male contact into the bushing until the first slight resistance is felt (contacts are approximately 2 inches apart). DO NOT HOLD IN THIS POSITION, but immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface. Apply sufficient force to engage the internal lock.
