Overview

The ABB Installation Products Loadbreak LR Long Bi-Metal Contact (SKU 02500270) is a high-reliability electrical connector engineered for medium-voltage applications ranging from 15-35kV with a 200 Amp continuous rating. This bi-metal contact features a copper tip section fused to a universal aluminum crimp barrel, enabling compatibility with both aluminum and copper conductors without galvanic corrosion concerns. The design supports two conductor configurations: 4/0 AWG stranded/compressed or 250 kcmil solid/compact, ensuring versatility across common utility and industrial installations. Measuring 2.88 inches in length, the contact is optimized for use with ABB 161/162LR, 261/262LR, 375/376LR, and 252LR bolted elbows, providing a secure mechanical and electrical connection in loadbreak switching operations. The bi-metal construction delivers superior conductivity and thermal performance, critical for repeated loadbreak cycles where arc interruption and contact integrity are paramount. Each unit ships as a single connector with an included crimp chart (CC-0020) for proper installation guidance. This component is essential for maintaining operational safety and efficiency in medium-voltage electrical distribution systems, particularly in applications requiring frequent switching or maintenance access. How to Install 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors on UD cable with concentric neutral and semi-con shielding, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and connection to a deadbreak bushing.

Estimated time: 45m

Tools needed:

Wrench, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hot stick, Suitable sensing device (for voltage test), Cable cut back template (or measuring tape)

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Lubricant (silicone grease), Hold-down Bail, UD cable, 25kV class 200 ampere deadbreak bushing or accessory device, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Grounding connector, Test point cap (if not pre-installed)

  1. Prepare for Installation

Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating components. Verify package contents are complete and undamaged. Check the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size to ensure a proper fit with your cable. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to check for any resistance or damage. Read all instructions thoroughly and have all required tools at hand, maintaining cleanliness throughout the procedure. If a test point cap is not installed, lubricate and install it.

  2. Train and Cut Cable

Train the UD cable as shown in the installation diagrams to ease operation and connection. Cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508 mm) of cable extends beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer for proper handling.

  3. Prepare Cable End

Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216 mm) back from the end of the cable. Carefully remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking extreme care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors thoroughly and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the semi-con shield as shown in the diagrams and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (3.2 mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  4. Assemble Elbow Connector

Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute other lubricants as they may be harmful. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess silicone lubricant from the assembly. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  5. Install Hold-Down Bail

Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket. Compress the bail and insert it securely into the brackets on the elbow connector.

  6. Connect Concentric Neutral to Ground

Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, ensuring not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires to allow for normal elbow operation.

  7. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, and lubricate them with the supplied lubricant ONLY if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Use a fully insulated hot stick to safely place the elbow onto the bushing. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. DO NOT SEPARATE THE ELBOW FROM THE BUSHING IF THE CIRCUIT IS ENERGIZED.

  8. Secure Elbow with Hold-Down Bail

Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt in a clockwise direction. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator. The nut should act as a stop to prevent the eyebolt from applying excessive force on the elbow. Once the nut is in its final position, it will not need to be readjusted when removing and replacing the elbow in the future.
