How to Install the Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector, designed to terminate UD cable with concentric neutral and semi-con shielding. It includes cable preparation, elbow assembly, and connection to a 25kV class deadbreak bushing, offering a voltage test point.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hot stick, Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
Elastimold 252LR Elbow Connector Kit (Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Hold-down Bail), Lubricant (supplied with kit), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) Copper Wire, Appropriate ground connector
- Ensure Safety and Inspect Components
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products. Installation must be performed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Inspect all supplied parts (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Wrench, Lubricant, Hold-down Bail) for damage, correct rating, and compatibility. Verify elbow housing cable entrance and compression lug sizes match your cable. Thread the probe into the lug by hand to check for damage. Remove any shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps. Lubricate and install the test point cap if not already present.
- Train and Cut the Cable
Train the UD cable as shown in the documentation to facilitate future operation. Cut the excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508.0mm) beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer.
- Prepare the Cable End
Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the cable end. Remove semi-con shield and insulation, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor, aligning its threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug per the chart, starting at the crimp line and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Wipe off excess inhibitor. Remove the remaining semi-con shield and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (3.2mm). Thoroughly clean insulation to remove all conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant. Do not substitute lubricants. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess silicone lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Install the Hold-Down Bail
Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket by compressing the bail and inserting it into the brackets.
- Connect Concentric Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, then lubricate them with the supplied lubricant. WARNING: Only lubricate if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing. DANGER: Do not operate by hand. Do not separate if energized.
- Secure the Elbow with the Bail
Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt in a clockwise direction. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator. The nut should act as a stop to prevent the eyebolt from applying excessive force on the elbow. Once the nut is in its final position, it will not need readjustment when removing and replacing the elbow.
