How to Install 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and wiring of 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors on UD cable, connecting them to a 25kV class deadbreak bushing or accessory device.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Hot stick (fully insulated), Cable cutter
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Lubricant, Hold-down Bail, UD cable (concentric neutral and semi-con shielding), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Appropriate connector (for neutral wires), Bushing (mating part), Test point cap (if not pre-installed)
- Prepare for Installation and Safety Checks
Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of any parts. Inspect all components (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Hold-down Bail) for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Verify the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size are appropriate for the cable. Check the probe threads by hand-threading it into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, check for damage and replace the component. If the test point cap is not installed, lubricate it with the supplied lubricant and install it on the test point. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Train and Cut the Cable
Train the UD cable to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508.0mm) extends beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut the excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.
- Prepare Cable for Lug Installation
Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the end of the cable. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors thoroughly and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the semi-con shield as shown in the diagram and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (3.2mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Install Elbow Housing and Probe
Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute other lubricants. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back and forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess silicone lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread, and tighten with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Ground Concentric Neutral Wires
Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, ensuring not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Bushing
Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, and lubricate with the supplied lubricant. IMPORTANT: Only lubricate if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. DO NOT SEPARATE IF ENERGIZED.
- Secure Elbow with Hold-down Bail
Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt in a clockwise direction. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator, acting as a stop to prevent the eyebolt from applying excessive force on the elbow.
