How to Install 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and wiring of Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors on UD cable, connecting them to 25kV class deadbreak bushings or accessory devices.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wrench, Cable cut back template, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Fully insulated hot stick
Supplies needed:
252LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Lubricant (supplied with kit), Hold-down Bail, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Appropriate connector (for grounding neutral wires), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if shipping covers are present), Test point cap (if not installed)
- De-energize All Apparatus
Ensure all apparatus in the work area are de-energized before beginning installation or removal of any parts. Do not touch or move energized products. Failure to follow this instruction will result in serious or fatal injury.
- Inspect Parts for Damage and Compatibility
Carefully inspect all parts for any damage, and verify their ratings and compatibility with mating parts. If the product is supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing.
- Conduct Pre-assembly Checks
Check the package contents for completeness and damage. Verify the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size for proper fit with the cable. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to check for resistance; if encountered, inspect for damage and replace components as needed.
- Prepare Cable for Training
Train the cable as shown in the documentation to facilitate operation. Cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508.0mm) beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer.
- Prepare Cable Insulation and Neutral Wires
Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the end of the cable. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor.
- Install and Crimp Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Remove Semi-con Shield and Clean Insulation
Remove the semi-con shield as shown in the cable cut-back template. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (3.2mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared surface without nicks.
- Lubricate and Slide Elbow Housing
Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant. Do not substitute lubricants, as other types may be harmful to this product or its mating product(s). Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess silicone lubricant.
- Align Elbow and Secure Probe
Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Install Hold-down Bail
Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket. Compress the bail and insert it securely into the brackets.
- Connect Neutral Wires to Ground
Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to De-energized Bushing
Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing. Lubricate both surfaces with the supplied lubricant ONLY if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing. Do not operate by hand or separate if energized.
- Secure Elbow with Hold-down Bail
Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten the eyebolt by turning it clockwise, adjusting the nut until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator, preventing excessive force on the elbow. Once the nut is in its final position, it will not need readjustment when removing and replacing the elbow.
